PCBCA: Rangla Punjab Scores

Hey so I just recieved an email from Rangla Punjab with the scores for our team:

There was a lot of talk after the comp about the judges and how they scored teams. Ranvir came up to basically every team after the comp and told them what happened in detail. The Canadian judges gave the Canadian teams the lowest marks on every single scorecard which is kinda stupid. Shan-e Punjab revieved the lowest of low marks from Canadian Judges. The comps done with now and nothing can be done but its so dumb how comp after comp there's something that comes up. I know my team ripped that stage apart on Saturday night and to see the scores from the Canadian Judges makes me wonder wtf happened...

The one thing that kinda bugged me and i think every team at the comp was the prop situation with AVA. At the end of the day it was the judges decision and no disrespect to AVA at all cuz they had a solid performance; and congrats on 1st by the way ..but what i was told was this: The Cali judges agreed that AVA should have lost 5 points from each judge because one girl had a broken arm and couldn't hold a saap, khunda, or kato (so basically 7 outta 8 girls used props) but the Canadian judges said NO to taking off points and thats why it took forever for them to announce 1st 2nd n 3rd.

Oh well whats done is done and time to move onto the next comp...

Who were the judges???

Baldev Mann (BC)- Started learning bhangra in 1987 at the age of 15 from Ustaad Ram Gosal. He later went on to learn bhangra from Inderjeet Singh at Khalsa College in Jalandhar. He was a member of Nachdi Jawani from 1992 to 1994 with Pammi Bai. Baldev went on to win many awards each year at the Punjab Police Cultural Meet. He has a B.A in music and has been promoting bhangra for many years. In 1998 he started off teaching bhangra at Kohinoor Folk Arts Club and then started his own TV show called “Mehak Watan Dee. Baldev judged at both Bhangra Idols 2008 and 2009 and is currently the account manager with RedFM promoting bhangra through the radio.

Harpreet Taggar (CA)- Began learning bhangra and dhol in the early 90’s from Ustaad Lal Singh Bhatti in the Bay Area. Harpreet danced for many of the pioneering bhangra teams in NorCal including DeAnza Gabroo Shooken, San Jose Shaan Punjab Di, LBC, and Rooh Punjab Di Davis, and ARC Bhangra. He continues to teach bhangra and dhol to the youth in Sacramento and Yuba City. He was on the judging panel for Shere Punjab Bhangra Competition in 2004. Harpreet’s focus now is on helping organize youth festivals all over the NorCal area.

Maninder Kataria (BC)- Was the captain of many different Bhangra teams in the 1980’s. He performed in the opening ceremonies of the Asia Games in New Delhi in 1982 and was a member of the Punjabi University of Patiala, a team that won countless youth festivals in India. Maninder later went on to coach a few different teams in the Faridkott Dist. Including the team from Brjindra College Faridkott. He has also previously judged at both Bhangra Idols 2008 and 2009 in Vancouver, BC.

Navrattan Sidhu(BC)- Has very sound knowledge of the Punjab culture and heritage. He won the title of Mr. Singh International and Sardar-E Punjab in 2007. Navrattan has been involved in all kinds of different cultural dances including Malwai giddha, jindwa, and bhangra. Navrattan was also the lead singer of his Malwai giddha team. He began taking part in all of these events during his early days in India and has now shifted to Canada. He is still an active stage performer and promoter in various bhangra shows and cultural events.

Raman Gurai (CA)- Raman has been involved in bhangra ever since he was a young boy. His family and friends have always kept him interested in bhangra and it shows on his resume. He started and choreographed for the first team at UC Berkeley along with dancing for teams like San Jose Shaan Punjab Di and Lethal Bhangra Crew. Raman has been choreographing and teaching bhangra since the age of 14 in the San Jose area. Raman previously judged at Bruin Bhangra in 2006.

Rashminder Khangura (CA)- Has been involved in and around bhangra since the age of 14. She has danced with several different teams at competitions, talents shows, and cultural events. Along with her bhangra background Rashminder also has a solid background in gidha. She did gidha along with bhangra in the Bay Area for most of her teenage years. Rashi helped start the first bhangra team at Hayward State University in California. She continues to help organize high school talent shows and cultural events in the Bay Area.

Here's the thing, Jason: You cannot draw out a bias based only on scores that PCBCA received. If all the teams provide their scores from respective judges, only then will we be able to draw conclusions on whether judges were fair or whether their opinions were matched by other judges.

For example, since each judge judged every single act, their scores become relative not absolute. Giving a team a 65 may seem like a low score, but you gotta look at the mean, standard deviation and range of all the scores that judge gave to say that judge was out of line and had a bias. In the end of the day, if that judge gave low scores to everyone but maintained the same standard deviation and range as someone who gave high scores, then that judge didn't have any more impact on judging than the higher score judge.

Have the competition organizers release all the scores (Hell, we'll all give them +1 Karma Points for doing so!) and then we can draw actual conclusions.

Ya bro I get all that, but Ranvir (on ABC) was there while the judges were deciding and saw all the scores. He told us that the Canadian Judges gave all the Canadian teams The lowest marks. But im just going off what he said so fair enough I won't draw conclusions from that.

There is a BIGGGGG difference in scores between American & Canadian Judges. If other teams are willing to release thier scores, it would help BTF members get an idea how this competition was judged.

Personally, 5 points for a one member not holding a Khunda, Shikka & Kato from each judge is alot considering when you add up the points, the team will have 30 point disadvantage from the get go. Deducting 1-2 marks by each judge would be more reasonable.

we were told the same thing that the Canadian judges gave us low scores and the ones from Cali gave us high scores. I would put the scoresheet for my team up but I dont have it rite now.

Same with us. Cali judges gave us good scores, but 2 out of the 3 Canadian judges gave us really low scores.

I dont think theres anything wrong in giving low scores, as long as it is consistent.

competitions are hella shady these days, i dont know if its only a few bad ones in the bunch but the idea of proper placings and all teams going home satisfied with the judging seems way to far fetched. im not specifically targeting this comp as i wasnt there but the only way we can develop the bhangra circuit and stop it from depleting is if we put on proper shows. the way i see it, if this is the way things keep happening, bhangra competitions will be dead in a couple of years (yet again thats just my opinion), i know everyone goes on about how we do this for the love of bhangra but not the placings and to move on after comps, but seeing the amount of effort and time put into these performances it makes it hard to just chill and let everything go when you feel that injustice has occured with whoever you represent
