Props definitely do have cultural significance which is why I too believe it is quite disrespectful to callously toss props! :) I remember how before every practice at PAU, all the team members would pray in a circle surrounding their props/dhol. The respect you should have for your props is the same respect you would accord a dhol...To quote a Pappi Gill boli: "Gut te gaane bunnee phirde, bhangrey nu rabb mannee phirdey!" :)

thats something im acutally quite interested in hearing about.

Solid set. I'm glad Ashqe brought up the props issue. It wasnt clear from a low-res video, but I watched the endings of the props segments a few times to really see how those katos and saaps were thrown. I think it was way too forceful and almost disrespectful to chuck them off-stage like that (i'm talking about getting rid of the katos especially at 2:50).
I dont know if i completly agree with that. I mean yes bhangra is traditional and has its cultural aspects and everything should be respected, but by extension should we consider it disrespectful if we misuse the props to? I do believe it is stupid to chuck props down at the risk of breaking them, but that comes at the own teams risk. Of course i might be wrong, maybe there is a cultural significance to the props im not to sure, but i think these days things are analyzed to closely somtimes. Its just a thought that ran through my mind while reading your comment Saleem.

Agreed... just like a dhol is an instrument which you respect, a chikka, kato etc is also an instrument (in a sense) and should be respected the same way you would treat another instrument. Yes sometimes in bhangra youre forced to toss an prop to avoid injury (i.e a prop coming under someones foot) but it should still be thrown accordingly and with as gently as possible... in my opinion .. literally throwing (with force) a prop down is rather disrespectful especially (like mentioned before) if you have the time to put it down by doing betka

With the aside wooooooooooooooo PCBCA LOVED the set...the gimmick i think on the miss pooja song was AMAZING..that itself deserved a placing...who cares what the placings at you guys know your first place to the bhangra community.. and really thats all that should matter..keep it up... I am now a fan! haha

clean.entertaining.clean.entertaining.clean.entertaining.clean.entertaining.clean - WOW

duuuudddee you boys tore it up! congratulations + good job to the teams + mr.kataria - i think you found the formula to win!

i haven't seen any of the other performances, so i'm not in the position to say this, but how did you guys not place? You guys had an 8 man set, and it was still entertaining (i usually zone out when i see an 8 man set). Bringing out the kids was genius (damn they're amazing)!

i've been to 5 competitions in the past two months, and at every single one, the judging was effed...straight up don't let this shit get to you guys, you guys smashed it....I know what its like to get screwed over, Its to the point where, i don't see much of a point in competing still
Dont let judging stop you from dancing at and enjoying bhangra competitions. You dance because you love it, not to win. If you dance to win/place, then you have lost what bhangra is all about. (not saying you do or have just don't stop dancing bc of judging)

PCBCA, you guys ripped that stage in half. That was Amazing. You guys are all smiles right now bc you see all of us praising you. Probably bigger smiles than if you had gotten the prize money and trophy, because you wouldn't be getting as much attention. This is a perfect example of why people/teams should never stop dancing because of judging, but to instead strive to be all they can be. This was easily a top 3 performance of the season and everyone knows it. When Jason and his team look back on their time with PCBCA 20 years later, they are gonna smile and be like "we did work and EVERYONE loved it." Guarantee that makes the memory so much better than looking back at a trophy and a couple grand. Sure they didn't get to jump around in joy and take pics with the trophy on stage, but all of us know they should have been.

That may be true, but there was a video posted awhile back with a respectable India team that CHUCKED props off stage with no disregard to the safety of aforementioned instruments. I know that just because an India team did it doesn't mean it's okay, but I know that a lot of people here look to teams in India to get an idea of what may be acceptable to do. (ie: whether it's okay for girls to slap their thighs)

Govind, here is the video. Fast forward to 2:25 to the end of the saap segment.

I would love to get thoughts on this. I don't think that just because one team (PAU) gives respect to props doesn't mean every other team should as well. Here, we have an example of a India team at a major competition who felt it was okay to throw props off stage.

PS - This could possibly be the beginning of a new discussion out of the PCBCA context. Perhaps Mods can make this a new thread?
