Was the title really necessary? Another bad attempt to Bhangra?

I'm sure a good amount of us here took part in dances similar to this one back in the day (ie: highschool) where proper traditional bhangra education was not accessible nor were good dancers available.

I'd ask you get off that high horse of yours and ask you be more considerate of other teams or clubs that may not have had the same opportunities as you. I don't see this as a "BAD ATTEMPT at BHANGRA", I see this as people doing what they consider fun.

I get what you are saying, but take it easyyy kinnell...posts like these are posted every day and instead of Bad Attempt at Bhangra...it is just titled "hilarious" or...something of that nature and the end result is the same...just people making fun of the video...sucks, but don't single out BDR....if you are going to take that stance, then make sure you defend every video posted....be that crusader, my brother. hahahha.

I wasn't trying to take a shot at anyone or anything I just saw this video and a few other of theirs and decided to post it. The whole point of Bhangra to me is having fun. But I just felt these guys weren't doing any justice to it. They are a collegiate level team and I guess are just starting out but common the least they can do is watch youtube and watch other teams. Sorry if I offended anyone that wasn't the point of this post at all.

Personally, I do see a difference between calling a performance funny (like drunk uncle dancing type threads) and calling a performance a bad attempt at bhangra. (like a team did their own thing, despite having a bhangra style from 1999). I do take things to extremes and I'll take it easy, bro.

So, new teams should watch youtube so we can have a few more VCU wannabees running around in the circuit? Sure, learning from the best from videos is fine, but I think doing your own thing, developing your own style and then down the road, incorporating traditional when it is accessible to you is more important. You don't develop your own style by watching other teams.

It seems like when people need moves, they go straight to youtube and jack them these days. If it's from a traditional team, "Sweet, we're traditional now too!".

haha actually Kinnell I do see what your saying. Its true that every team needs to have somewhat of there own style and all. Even if you look at Indian teams they each have something a little bit different about them. But I think it is important to incorporate some tradition when there developing there style. Later on it might not fit them to be traditional. But at the same time maybe they are trying not to be traditional!! Maybe they just want to be a Modern team. Who knows. Either way I think there needs to be more competition in the college Bhangra scene. It just seems like a few teams like VCU, 3D and others just show up to comps and dominate. The Private teams are way more competitive. Anyways maybe me you and Jeeti can go down and show them some traditional stuff!! Plus we play Florida in Jacksonville every year.

it doesn't even seem like the team even took it seriously, so i dont think the OP is doing any harm....

What makes you think they didn't take it seriously? All I see is that the team is not very experienced... But they still went up there and performed... To performers like us it's very easy getting on stage cause we're accustomed to it, and we feed of it... But teams just starting out may not have that level of comfortability, yet they still give it an effort...

I commend this team for at least trying, regardless of how good or bad it came out...

I didn't watch the video, nor did I red any of the comments above. I'm going based on title alone.

Think about this for two seconds. How long do you think it takes for a team to a) develop a style, and b) become as good of a dancer as everyone on this forum "thinks they should be." Both take a lot of time. It took me four years to become the dancer that I am now (dear Jesus has time gone by...)

Even if you take a team like SGPD-who started in 2002 (correct me if I'm wrong here). How long did it take them to develop THEIR style and step up to THE level where they are?

Be supportive and useful. It takes balls to step on a stage and perform in front of people.

BDR, if this performance was at a competition like Bruin - then I can agree with you, it needs to be more competitive. But it's not and I don't feel like it should be given much critique. KJ did Thriller at a wedding gig - isn't doing MJ a bad attempt at bhangra?

And personally, I love traditional bhangra and I think folk bhangra is where it's at. But I don't think successful bhangra teams need to be traditional. I'm down for going to Florida though, BDR, to do some folk bhangra!

Sunny, I agree with Underground Gabroo. This team took the time to choreograph an unique routine, make a mix, practice, get costumes, put costumes on day of, get on stage and perform. Who are you to say that they didn't take it seriously? I've seen competitive teams do less than that.

Yeah, I do remember - Fun times. But Sunny, the manner you keep bringing it up randomly makes you look pathetic.

Hmm...what's sad to think about is that if a member of this group/team or whatever they are wanted to learn more about bhangra and ended up reading this thread it would be really discouraging...

It isn't that serious, true. However...BTF is snobby and it can be intimidating for people who are trying...just something to think about I guess when we make posts like these...

BTF is lacking in the 'respect for other teams' section when it comes to teams that are not that "good." Constructive criticism is necessary and appreciated...but "they suck" is just useless.

Very well said! We need to show support for starter teams as they're "learning" and won't/can't be perfect right away...

This routine could've been executed much better, if the performers had made the attempt.
I'm saying it didn't seem like they gave it all they had, so it wasnt as good as it COULD'VE been.

Kinnel- how the $#%& do i "keep" bringing it up?

Your calling me pathetic, seriously, you of all people? we're the ones who took you into OUR room for most of that night when you got kicked out of YOURS by your own team & were sleeping on the patio. Wouldn't you call that pathetic?
