Sikh Prisoner's Hair Forcibly Cut

A Florida man, Jagmohan Singh, was dealt the ultimate insult when his hair was cut by Florida Prison authorities in July. I urge everyone to sign the petition and pass it along, because this type of religious persecution effects everyone, regardless of your religion or belief system. And before anyone brings up the fact that he is in prison, let me just say I don't think it matters one bit. Regardless of the mistakes he did or did not make, he still deserves the decency to be able to practice his religion. And for his hair to be cut is the WORST thing that can be done to a Sardar. This is just another sad example of civil liberties slowly being eroded and the lack of respect and human decency we are continue to display in this world.

And another tidbit from the petition: The sad irony about Jagmohan Singh?s situation is that he narrowly escaped religious persecution under the Taliban in Afghanistan, where Sikhs were not allowed to practice their religion freely under the tyrannical regime. Jagmohan fled to America in 2001 on the basis of religious persecution, only to have his dearest of religious rights violated while serving a sentence for a misdemeanor offense.

Here is the petition: http://unitedsikhs.org/petitions/petition.php?id=11

Absolutely terrible. What's really sad is this person came to America to escape racial injustice.

this is a terrible act done by florida authorities...

my cousin helped handle the case (although loosely with SALDEF) and he mentioned how this case was not going well, and it wasn't promising on his behalf.

although this man was convicted as a criminal, the simple right of free religion should continue.

Your cousin violated confidentiality and privacy acts in his practice and shared information about his client's case with you? I wish I knew people in SALDEF! Yay!

Either way, U.S. Homeland Security seems to really enjoy religiously humiliating individuals who are Muslim, Sikh, etc.

freedom of religion is just as important if not more important than freedom of speech. I know when you go to jail their require you to cut your hair for hygiene. but religion shouldn't be sacrificed I don't think Americans realize how serious people take their religion. American's in general don't really stay strict to something like religion. As racist as it sounds but it what i feel. American's don't really have a whole lot of respect/seriousness for something like religion. Not to say all don't but i would say a majority don't. Regardless if the person was a rapist or a killer or a thief, it doesn't mean he should be striped from his religion or be insulted in that manner.

bro no matter what he did wrong, that gives the jailors no right to cut his hair. btw, its wrong to fight fire with fire.
