Slumdog Millionaire!

I just watched Slumdog Millionaire last night and I cannot get it out of my head. I was blown away! From everything to the actors that played the characters, to the storyline, to the way it was directed to the fact that the film has so much energy even with so much tragedy, it was an amazing film!

I would even put it at tied with Dark Knight for the best movie of 2008. At the end, where you see flashbacks, you realize how three dimensional the characters actually were (ie: Salim) and that only makes me want to see it again!

Just saw the movie, I thought it was great! I felt some parts could have been better shaped, especially since we never really found out how he got on the show lol
but for an "east meets west" movie it was pretty good.... reminded me of the kite runner a lot...

the last third of the movie was a 2, the first 2/3's were a 10...thus the movie gets an 8 from me.

i felt like the director got lazzy as hell after the flashbacks ended.

This movie was really original and i definitely enjoyed it a lot. One thing i couldnt get out of my head was how good the child actors were! Who knows how long it took to shoot their scences, but they nailed everything so well

Amitabh ka helicopterrr!!!!!

+1

*Jamal as a child covered in poop, holding his precious picture, yelling* Amitabbbbbh Bachaannnnnn!!!!

HaHa. Funniest part of the film!

I definitely agree that this movie was top notch (one of the top three in 2008) and I have no doubts that it will win many awards. I love it how showed aspects of the true-reality/life of India (which much of Bollywood instead tries to hide) in a very tasteful manner. Overall, the acting and picturization was extremely well done.

Go see it if you haven't already!!! An A+ in my book for sure.

Yeah, Basim, I agree. They really showed the life of a slumdog quite accurately. Nothing was left out, from the entire brutality from the Muslim-Hindu clashes (it was really graphic) to police brutality in interrogating prisoners to how orphans are manipulated into begging for money to prostitution to crime to gang-life.

I dunno though, do you think non-South Asians enjoyed it as much as South Asians? I loved seeing Bollywood faces and the Bollywood dance at the end. I loved the hindi lines. It wouldn't have been the same in subtitles. Most of us know that these situations exists and how bad it really it is, so when a movie brings all of these aspects together so well, it does hit a chord with us.

And in regards to Jamal getting on the show. When everyone else at the call center is calling to become a contestant and no one gets it, Jamal says something along the lines that you have to call when they say the word "if" or something like that. He said he learned it from technical when he was asked how he would know.

Of course they did! Or else it wouldnt be getting so many nominations. Actually I don't think hollywood has ever seen a storyline like this one, which is why non south asians would really enjoy this movie. It was really different. Rather than a full on hindi movie with subtitles, this movie was one that would be easy to follow for non south asians because there wasn't a language barrier and at the same time they'd be focused on the movie; as a result, being educated on current issues in India. Its actually fascinating. There have been various films on say, the genocides in different locations in africa, the holocaust, etc. I don't recall a movie based in India, ever being made which showed the works of the caste system, treatment of females, and other corruption. Its good to see more attention is being shown to this part of the world.

yea its bollywood enough to show, well, aspects of bollywood and india, but hollywood enough (with the interesting plot and action and stuff) to appeal to non-South-Asians too. lovely, lauwwwely.

Saw the movie twice as well...both times very entertaining...and i like how it captures part of the "real" India and yet is still able to be a very cultural movie with a few quintessential bollywood touches...

My fav scene in the movie was with the teenage Salim searching for Latika and comes across the blind boy singing that bhajan and says for Salim to not be sorry for him...really struck me both times I watched the movie...

Actors (children esp) were pretty remarkable...and it was nice seeing a few familiar Bollywood faces as well..

Music: A. R. RAHMAN w/ M.I.A.!!! nuff said (has anyone heard the DFA mix of Paper Planes? SO GOOD)

I watched the movie with a few non-South Asians and they loved it as well, esp the last song "Jai Ho"...
_____

P.S....I saw Valkyrie last night...i recommend watching it as well...

thought it was a great movie.....and ive heard the same from plenty of non-indian people, i think the only thing they really miss out on is knowing how real/accurate something might be, and some of the translations were not direct haha. and a few times they didnt even translate a line...

Rajkaran, I believe that was Jamal in that scene (searching for Latika), not Salim. That scene was definitely very powerful though... "You got saved my friend, I wasn't so forunate.. that's the only difference." :'(

I definitely agree with that Amit.. they said the curse word Bhen C*od (or a variation of it) about 3-4 times throughout the film without any translation. lol. :p But I guess many non-desi's might have figured it was some harsh term by the end of the film.

Wow guys, I just saw this movie last night and agree that it was absolutely amazing! Figures there's a thread on here about it!

A lot of you mentioned how they depicted the life of a slumdog so accurately. That has to be one of the most unfortunate parts of the movie; not that they showed it so well, but that it's the truth. All the crime, poverty, religious disputes, etc. are things I haven't even come close to experiencing in the States. I mean I've been to India plenty of times, and seen it I suppose, but I feel like it's kinda brushed off. So what do you guys think? As privileged descendants of India/Pakistan/and the likes, is it our responsibility to at least try to make the situation better in the motherland? Obviously attempts have to have already been made at bettering the situation, and it's not like something miraculous is going to happen over night, but do you even think it's our responsibility or is it a matter for the respective nation's government/people?

On a lighter note, it was friggin amazingggg how they busted out in a proper bollywood song and dance sequence at the end! I should've expected it, but I didn't. It made me ;D Besides that, to all that have recommended the book, I will definitely pick it up. I'm excited! I personally didn't feel like there were any loose ends left or that any part of the movie wasn't crafted well, but I've only seen it once. I'll look into it a lil differently in the following rounds.
