Law and Order is an addicting show and TNT = 24/7 re-runs of L/O. SVU has hands down the most interesting and heart touching stories.

Yeah, I watch too much TV. Side-effect of sleeping too little and multitasking too much.

Well, I've watched enough Law and Order to think that mentally ill is not being able to tell the difference between right and wrong. If she honestly believes what she is doing is right and if it is wrong, then by law standards, she is mentally ill. However, she has done nothing wrong but express her horrendous views. If she attacked a soldier and said God made her do it and she had no remorse and no guilt and thought it was completely right, then she is mentally ill.

The War in Iraq gets twisted. This will for sure become a discussion about the war, but the US is not fighting for the freedom of speech, they are fighting to eliminate enemies of the US who would inflict economical and casualty damage. To say that these soldiers are fighting for our freedom or our right to speech is exaggerating it. These soldiers are at max, minimizing terrorist threats that would compromise our safety.

OK. She's definitely a literalist of the King James Bible. However, as Fox pointed out, she doesn't live by all tenets of the bible and I believe her belief in God is more similar to that of the OT God (because of her redudancy in saying that the Wrath of God is upon us). The NT God tends to seem more sympathetic, but she chooses to ignore all passages in the Bible that preach about forgiveness and sympathy.

Meh, if killing was legal, I'd worry more about what she would do then what everyone else would do to her. She's the one with the shady moral compass, most of us know the difference between right and wrong.
Ok so forgive me for responding this late. Been a little busy :( First thing-Kinnell, I've worked for lawyers. I've had jury duty. In fact, the lawyer I worked under also has a Master's degree in forensic psychology. Believe me when I tell you, Law and Order does not equal real life. I'm also a good 94.5% sure that if this were a case, and she was brought into trial as a defendant for her actions, the 12 person jury would not believe that "mentally ill" plea for more than 3 seconds (more or less because they would probably believe that any act of treason-insane or not-should be punishable under law).

Also, I'm ignoring the part of your argument where you were talking about the troops. That is not what we're discussing here.

As for her actions-I'm going to try to go through this as much as I could with what I learned in the two psych classes that I have taken. In a court case (since you mentioned Law and Order), her religious beliefs are not in question. The court is only examining her actions and whether or not the defendant "knew what he/she did was wrong." So we think about the signs, and the chanting: "God hates your tears," and "America is going to hell," etc. It would be one thing if she were trying to "help the mourning family understand the 'errors' in its way."

But that's clearly not the case. She's doing this to pour salt into the family's wound, and to make this family feel as though THEY are the ones who shot a bullet into their loved one's heart. In essence, she knows that her chants and signs are hurting the family. Does she know that what she's doing is wrong? Like I said-I don't have the advanced degree to answer that. But I'm going to lean toward yes.

Going on FOX and expressing your opinion is one thing-if we don't like what she has to say, than we have the freedom to change the channel. She could express her views to the family on television and "help them understand where they went wrong," without having to stand outside for however many ours and lose her voice. But protesting at a funeral, or close enough to where the mourning family can see you at such a vulnerable time, is done seemingly for shock factor or for publicity.

I believe that she either knows what she's doing is wrong, or is still in the process of convincing herself that she's right. Notice her hesitation and her tone in defending her actions. If she's still in the process of convincing herself, than there is some sort of conscience in her mind thinking "what if people were protesting at my child's funeral?" And if this is the case, than the insanity plea is thrown right out of the window.

Lastly, there is a time and a place to preach. Her freedom to voice her opinion stops where the family's right to mourn the loss of their loved one begins-if not by social law, than by moral law. She knows that, or at least acknowledges it-and so should all of us.

Joe, I never really assumed that Law and Order is real life and I completely believe you when you say otherwise. I'm just saying that my opinion (because the matter is shades of gray, not black and white) is based on Law and Order.

The reason I brought up troops is because Fox News frames the story as this "She says troops are going to hell, the same troops that fight for her right to speak her mind, which she is using to talk shit about the troops". But I guess that's common knowledge that Fox New is a bit opinionated. lol

I think the problem comes in whether she thinks she's doing something wrong. You said the court is examining her actions and whether or not the defendant knew what she did was wrong. I kind of see what you're saying, but being nice to a mourning family is not a law, but just common courtesy. She stated that she stayed 500 ft away from the funeral and broke no laws. She's just willing to do anything to get her message across.

Joe, in my opinion, because you've stated and I respect yours, I think she's a horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible monster and I hate the fact that I'm kinda defending her. But I think this monster doesn't realize what she's doing is wrong and thus her name lunatic is appropriate, in my opinion.

If we were to use your train of though here, than all of the terrorists behind the 9/11 attacks and so on could be deemed under the same category. THEY did what they believed was right according to their religion. They were a hundred percent convinced that 9/11 was the best way to start a jihad, putting into question the whole concept of jihad. So, all of those who are locked up in Guantanamo Bay, or awaiting their end on death row, show therefore be put under the Mentally unstable category, no? But wait, that's the whole point; these people have become mentally ill, with psychological problems, not with gene defects and etc. They're not going to be so lucky in the court of justice.
