wait...

I'm SO confused now about my family...

So my family says Gunda, Chabi, & Loon...but also says Tharka and Jura..but my family also adds "ney" at the end of sentences...

so is my family doaba or malwa? or something else?
Happens with our family as well. If your family is from Ludhiana area, they will tend to use some Doaba Slang along with thier Malwa slang. If they are from the the hearts of Malwa (Moga, Faridkot, Ferozpur, Patiala), then Malwa slang runs in your family.
yupp thats me right there
i use malwa and doaba slang (noon, tharkha etc.)
so its like a mixture :p
LUDHIANA FTW

Last time I checked, my parents mentioned Lahore/Gujranwala...

where does that put me in terms of language?
Both of those places are in heart of Majha for sure so its Majhi dialect. It is ascribed as 'Standard' Punjabi in books and stuff.

PakiJab has some other fun dialects like Jhangochi (In and around Jhang area), Pothowari and Seraki (even though people say its a separate language).

It's interesting to finally find out! But now that I think about it, I'm guessing my family's dialect is a mix since they were actually born/raised in Thailand and must've been exposed to a bunch of dialects from different Punjabi immigrants to the country.

thanks!

seriously hahahah can we get a little doaba love in here? To add on to Raja's, I also say LOON. What else, oh yea Ive also noticed malwa people say "Ney" at the end of their sentences. Like "Asi othey gey Ney", as opposed to "Asi othey gey si". All good though! hahaha, Malwa Bhangra is the best afterall!
that is false news.... i know for a fact a true malwai woudl never say ''ney'' at the end of there sentence.....you prolly heard it from some american born confused malwai

Othay gey ney would be a different tense. Like immediate past but not long past. Someone get a Punjabi grammar master here.

not trying to be offensive or anything, but unfortunately this confusion with spelling its because people dont actually use roman script to transcribe gurmukhi properly. i wish they would because then we would all know how to pronounce it and write it without referring to the original gurmukhi form :(

like saying sat sri akal when really it should be Sat(i) Sree akaal, or jhumer being jhoomar, or guru actually is guroo

i study phonetics (major: linguistics) so if im overreacting forgive me :p

good point, romanized punjabi only makes sense to native speakers because we know the pronunciation already. but the confusion is because of actual pronunciation differences or different words. these dialects predate gurumukh script too. like some people say jhumer like jhummar and some say chummar and even weirder people from the actual place where jhumer was danced call it jhumbar.

I have it bad...my mothers from malwa, my dads from doaba, and my grandfather is from majha...my boli, slang, and accent is soooo mixxed and varied, that my girlfriends mother talks shit about the way i talk, to my girlfriend [ btw...shes just my classmate;) ]..........true story =(

On that note, has anyone ever noticedd the gurdaspuri boli where they say stuff like...

SHadak ( road), and say "paye de" at the end of alot of scentences...for example.

"ghar de vich meriyan kuschian paye de"

One word that has been overlooked

Yogurt

Malwa - Daheen

Doaba - Khatta
Daheen is seperate.

Doaba's say Khatta
Malwai say raita

Daheen is also thicker, and Khatta/Raita is more watered down, and always has little pakori's in it or 'toothpick thin' carots and crushed black pepper pre-mixed.
