1. Nas (i could post songs that would blow your mind, though he has had some slips)
2. Tupac (also a studio whore, made a billion songs)
3. Biggie
4. Eminem
5. Jay-Z
6. DMX
7. Rakim
8. Outkast
9. A Tribe Called Quest
10.

Others that get love, but don't make the list for various reasons such as limited runs.

Black Star, Big Pun, Ludacris, Jadakiss, Talib Kweli as a soloist, Mos Def as a soloist, Common, The Roots, old school snoop... and others.

This should be bigger than 10 btw... cause at least 5 spots are already owned. Jay Z, Nas, Pac, Big, and Eminem are likely to appear in 99% of lists.

For the record, Dre writes less than 5% of all his stuff, so he gets no points from me as a RAPPER. And you can't wish diddy never happened... cause we would NOT have had biggie.

oh and Vanilla Ice.... :) i kid.

1. NAS no question
2. Big L cant believe no one thinks hes at the top, lifestylez ov da poor and dangerous is only topped by illmatic, u cn take that to the bank
3. Notorious BIG, def more talented than Pac, who ppl give waaaay too much credit (i said it)
4. Andre Benjamin, most consistent from the beginning, even nas cooled off for a few cds
5. Black Thought, tho im not a huge roots fan

ppl stop naming groups, name who in them is good. wu-tangs a nice pic, b id not put anyone except meth, gza, inspector deck or maybe ghost (doubtful) anywhere near a top 10 list. tribe did a lot for hip hop...q-tips aite, phifes entertaining, neither overly talented, just made awesome music. pharcyde ok, b i wanna claw my ears off my head when i hear booty brown rap its a fact, no matter how good the others are. black star? mos def raps 45% of the time on his own albums (tho he is good at it) and talib kweli joins pac n jay-z as sinfully overrated. and as for outkast, thats the only excusable one for me, cuz big boi is close.

nobody said ll cool j cuz he blows. oh n once upon a time rakim was the shit. jay-zs good with money n the first half of reasonable doubt. his last two cds scrape the ice off my windshield i kid you not, at least they have a use. i need an icescraper they suck at that too

i wouldn't say wayne's weak on the mike...he just has no substance to what he's talking about...other than that sometimes his lyrics are pretty clever in a nonsensical kinda way.... oh ya i got my pick:

btf's very own....nikhil desai...he's sickk, here's a link to his song

Alright, I have to disagree with some of the things you said :D
As far as the groups that I have mentioned, I feel that I listed groups who have members that feed off of one another and display absolute chemistry. You have to realize why Wu-tang is such an obvious pick: The absolute mayhem on the mic and their contrasting styles create, strange enough, a nice blend of imaginary, kung-fu, demented form of lyricism. This was enigmatic of the early 1990's, when Hip Hop was being retarded by Gangsta Rap. Wu-tang kept the aggressive, "attack the stage" mindset. The members you singled out may not have excellent solo projects but when they are in the group, as a number of rappers, they make you laugh your ass off and grin uncontrollably: See "The Mystery of Chessboxing."
A tribe called quest did SO much for hip hop, you're right. They were related to De La Soul, and Leaders of the New School. You said it already: they made awesome music by being lyricists and producing thier own music. Midnight Marauders is AMAZING.
Please don't hate on Blackstar. I cannot begin to tell you that thier one album is better than 95% of the crap that's out today STILL. I don't know what you mean by Mos Def rapping only 45% on his albums...do you mean he has a lot of cameo appearances, or that he sings alot? Either way, you can't blame the guy for having people like Rah Diggah/Pharaoh Monch come on occasionally, because his non-blackstar projects are ridiculous. Talib is definitely not overrated...please listen to Reflection Eternal Train of Thought 5 Billion times...the production on his other albums were horrendous compared to that album. I couldn't stand Quality or The beautiful struggle, so hopefully, IF he ever gets his second Reflections Eternal album out, he will be riding high again.

Honorable Mention: ONYX.
My favorite song: Scenario
