Toronto/Vancouver/Surrey bhangra > USA bhangra..... therefore their allowed to try these type of things. Just sit back and observe.

I think this whole thing is getting out of control with the skeptical remarks. I think both sides have good arguments when it comes to wether its good or not for bhangra, but from what i can see so far the people from toronto are saying lets see what happens while the people from america are against the idea totally. I know it isnt a battle of countries but i think americans should just sit back and watch for now if it works out, wicked, its good for bhangra. If it doesnt then the people IN toronto suffer no?

The teams that make up this federation have paved the way for bhangra in my area, so if anyone has the right to try this, Im okay with it being the teams that brought us bhangra in the first place. There are enough competitions that happen in the rest North America to let this expirement occur in one area.

So discuss away but I still believe the best course of action is to let it play out, AND then lets discuss the shit outa it lolll.

you're right dude. I'm not sure if alot of these posts have been directed to me, i'm simply trying to point out what i think is a fundamental flaw in the plan. But then again, i believe that any ideas that oppress/set limits to innovation are somewhat foolish to partake in because innovation drives EVERYTHING in the world. If during the renaissance, people set guidelines that said "this is how you are supposed to paint, no other way" then contemporary art would not exist. because the visionaries who created a completely NEW STYLE would have been banned from showcasing their art, no? Thats my only worry, that this JUDGING criteria which docks points for things like american lyrics or any other aspects will simply prevent people from trying NEW things and moving bhangra FORWARD. I agree, and i FULLY support the idea of preserving culture, but to create limitations on what a whole community can do isn't preserving anything. it is preventing development. The limits are less likely to be pushed when you are punished for trying (in the form of losing points/losing competitions). Maybe my original post came off harsh, but that was what immediately jumped out at me.

I am in FULL support of preservation of culture, but not by setting rules that state how competitions have to judge/what teams can/cannot do unless it in someway is causing harm/danger. So maybe i'm just viewing one extreme of this federation idea, hopefully it is much milder and simply looks to PROMOTE rather than to CONTROL. defining that line will be very, very tricky.

i'm also gonna say one more thing here. If bhangramaster is from toronto, this is exactly why toronto SHOULD NOT be the location where this "federation" could occur. because if he is in anyway a reflection of the attitude of people from there (im not saying he IS i'm saying IF), then he is just proof that they somehow feel their style/their beliefs are better/more accurate than anyone elses. Is that who you want telling you how to dance? i don't think so. Though i truly hope that the people selected can shelve their own styles and views on bhangra and be accepting of ALL views, simply set fair, and clear boundaries that HELP TO PRESERVE THE MOST BASIC OF THE CULTURE and nothign more. Preserve culture, Promote innovation.

LOL jasraj whyd you delete your post homie?

I am in FULL support of preservation of culture, but not by setting rules that state how competitions have to judge/what teams can/cannot do unless it in someway is causing harm/danger. So maybe i'm just viewing one extreme of this federation idea, hopefully it is much milder and simply looks to PROMOTE rather than to CONTROL. defining that line will be very, very tricky.
just dont apply to those comps then.

i think taking it back to more traditional isnt a bad idea. as is, the circuit is already straying away from "traditional" bhangra.

lol thats not the point, but ok. And sure, taking it back to traditional is fine. Have comps that do that, whatever. but whats the point in dictating what other comps do? If a competition is thrown outside the federation, is it going to be blackballed? de-promoted? or just left alone. these are all things that matter.

To add to that, like someone mentioned before this only effects 1 or 2 competitions as there aren't that many competitions in Toronto so I don't understand why people think this is something that is going to have a massive impact on the north american bhangra scene. If anything it's going to keep teams in check by preventing fights between toronto teams at any competition.

good point. again, i'm just expressing a different view point guys. but nvm, i give up, i'm just looking like the bad guy here. I hope this does tremendous, GREAT things for bhangra. 1-2 comps, or every comp in the nation.

lol how often are u going to go to toronto to compete? its called the TORONTO bhangra federation, and the north american bhangra federation. US comps outnumber the TBF by far.

Let them do what they want. If toronto is in consensus about those rules then let them do their thing.
