Traditional Boliyan Help

So, seeing as how I sadly cannot speak mostly any Punjabi at all I was hoping someone could help me with some lyrics and translation of some popular boliyan that people sing for live teams a lot. There are so many that I like even though I don't understand the meanings behind the songs, but I was hoping someone could help me start off with this one with lyrics and a translation if possible. Thanks a lot everyone in advance..

The part at 3:22 and thanks again.

PS: Is that someone playing the tumbi with the like raindrop type sound in the background? This is probably the only video I've actually seen with any team India or otherwise using a tumbi which I thought was interesting.

his face looks like the moon when it's full
when he dances bhangra he looks good.

Well actually yeah nevermind it probably is the Dhad, my bad. I've just heard the Dhad sample that a lot of music teams use and it didn't really sound like the one in the video so I got kind of confused. It sounds sick.

No offence but, suha cheera is not a style of pagg, it is a color. suha= red cheera is just another name for a Pagg.

and Faizan really good translation but i think the transliteration should be a little different because it is hard to learn the pronunciation.

I am not going to get in to Punjabi grammar, but i am giving you the definitions of most of the words as close as they can be related into to English. Faizans translation is better for understanding the overall meaning.

hath (hand) uthay(above) gaana(string on wrist) oday(his) sir(head) uthay suha(red) cheera (turban)
gal(neck) vaala(belonging to) kehntha(male necklace) uno baarah(alot) jach da( jach da= looks good)
ni mundah(boy) bhangray'ch(in bhangra) nachda(lit. he dances) sona(good) lagh da(looks)

saron(Mustard plant) jeya(like) kadh(height) sayon(like, as) dudh(milk) chitta(white) rang(color) udah
mukh(face) sona(handsome) punaya-da-chand(full moon) lagh-da( looks like)
ni munndha bhangray'ch nacda sona lagh da

just a side note.
in the word kentha, the 'tha' is retroflex, roll your tongue and say 'tha'

any more and i can help out too!

lol I did not mean to snap, its just that its good when every1 knows the definition of the individual words. and I'm sorry if it seems I snapped at anyone, it was definitely not my intention.

definitely, just get me the lyrics and ill be more than glad to do so.

i think the one you are referring to is Sadah nittrey Madanan vichon Soormey
Sadah (always)
Nittrey(win)
Madaan(battle, competition)
Vichon (Inside)
Soormey (Warriors, the brave)

So translation... The brave always win the competition.

help me find the rest of the lyrics or even a video to it and ill translate.

Wow! Big props to Faizan & Parhar for translating this for us to enjoy! +1 :)

I agree that Faizan's translation was awesome for an overall meaning, but Parhar's translation was equally important to give a word-by-word breakdown for every lyric (where one can note some minor differences.. i.e., saron = mustard plant, instead of evergreen tree).

I would love to learn actual meanings of a lot of other songs/bolis, so thank you all for your contributions!

thanks basim, i agree translation, transliteration and word by word translation is necessary to fully understand these boliyan. While there are approx 28 dialects of Punjabi, it is easy to learn Punjabi and the pronunciations. I really think it is necessary for people to know what they are dancing to especially if it is traditional bhangra. Knowing that the singer is saying your a sexy ass gabroo means you could dirt off your shoulder lol.

if anyone has any more questions I can help.

Yeah thanks everyone that was really helpful too both of you. I really like the word-by-word because I get to at least learn a few punjabi words out of it which is great. I noticed you put another thread up which is basically the same idea as this thread so I'll put up my other requests in that thread so that there aren't two seperate threads going on at the same time about the exact same type of topic. Thanks again bro.

Hey Tuckerrrr, could you please ask for this translation in the official "meaning of boliyan" thread: http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/index.php?topic=1776.msg21566#msg21566

It has kindly been stickied by the moderators, so anyone can ask any translation they need there.

Much appreciated,

~ Basim

hey Parhar, are you a linguistics major or something? You use technical terms like "retroflex" and "dental th" haha which are used when explaining how to pronounce words. I know those terms cuz I've looked through some "Learn Bengali" books which use similar terminology.

Also, what's NYAFC? Probly new york something right?
