India's greatness can only be truly be appreciated in the pinds... Don't stay in the pricey, western, 150 star hotels... Shitting in a hole in the ground, eating food at the dhabas, travelling in the homeless class on the trains where you shit directly onto the tracks, waking up in villages to the sounds of "chaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii garam garam chaiiiiii" by some dude holding a bucket and a couple of cups, mosquitos biting every exposed part of your body, pani puri and chaat, oh man the list goes on, but thats India in a nutshell...

Yeah, but before you do all this, make sure you get vaccinations. Vick, you make it sound all legit and all, but you gotta watch out.

My dad lived in India for most of his life, so he had at least an immunity to the water and such. He goes back to India every 6 months for family and business. Even then, he's really careful about what he eats and stuff. Unfortunately 2 years ago, he came back to the US with a strain of Hepatitis E. He did end up recovering after taking months off of work and frequent hospital visits.

It may be awesome to experience the pindh of India, but don't be stupid and let it kill you.

VICK!!!!!!! WELL SAID couldn't have said it better myself!! You def. can't experience the "real India" until you have at least
1) 5-10 mosquito bites
2) tasted a gol guppa in unsanitary conditions
3) slept on a manja outside and listen to the annoying car horn tunes!!
4) almost ate it during a rickshaw ride

Maybe I should have added "come back with Hepatitis E" to my list... haha... I'm kidding... I hear you man, shit can happen anywhere at anytime, as long as you are cautious enough, you should be alright... I went to high school in India for 4 years and I was born here, I came back alive and disease free, so its possible... I was well vaccinated though, you definitely dont want to pick up a case of malaria or something, that could cause some issues in your travel plans...

what are you 12? Just cuz he doesn't speak the same english you do, doesn't mean you go and disrespect like that. this thread started with whats enjoyable and worth seeing when you go to India, and Varunjit stated how its becoming a "what problems you face when you go there" thread. Instead of complaining and b*tching about the downsides of going to a 3RD world country since it doesnt compare to your living standards here, maybe you should follow the actual thread and show your appreciation for it. Just as jasmeet mentioned earlier, ROMANTICIZE. Its obvious that there are things to be cautious about, but it wasn't the point of the thread. I'd be offended too if people were talking like that about where I lived. Think of how Varunjit feels. He grew up there! Your sarcasm isnt impressive or humorous. Grow up!

Varunjit, I apologize if I started the trend of being more realistic and less appreciative of Bharat mata and such. I absolutely love India, but my family tends to be very cautious when visiting my relatives in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Honestly, even with vaccinations, I have never been allowed to drink water that was not boiled first, are really cautious with uncooked foods when visiting family friends and not even allowed to eat any food off of the streets (no matter how scrumptious the kulfi looks or how great the pani puri smells).

When we traveled across India from various locations in South India from Bangalore to Hydrabad to Chennai to countless others (My sister was doing bharatnatyam performances across South India), my parents and I stayed at 5 Star Hotels while my sister stayed at her guru's houses. My sister did end up getting a nasty reaction to a mosquito/ant bite and even my mom, a doctor, freaked out. Anything bad can happen, but that doesn't mean we should appreciate it any less. I have helped out on an ambulance that traveled to various villages in Gujarat and it was a great and eye-opening experience.

Ugh Shanjeet. In no way am I bitching about the downsides of going to India. Perhaps through saying "Be cautious", I'm essentially bitching that I've never been able to experience the things Varunjit, Vivak and Laddi have been able to experience. Even though my family has been cautious with good reason, I don't think I appreciate India any less than anyone else, but I do wish I would have the opportunity to do the things you guys stated without hesitation. I'm still craving that kulfi bar that one dude was selling outside Akshardam (New Delhi) but I know that's not a realistic goal. :-\

kinnell, the anger in my post wasn't directed towards you, but the content was. I don't like it when ignorant people act they don't understand things deliberately. That was directed towards the person who repsonded to varunjit.

Dude I totally agree, go to the pinds!
Basically do a tour around Punjab like starting at Amritsar then going all the way to Jalandhar etc etc.
Trust me, you will enjoy it more than a hotel ;)
