I have to say, im honestly embarrassed of competitions on the northwest. City of Bhangra...honestly its the city of throw a competition and confuse the crap out of everyone who came there.

MY PLACINGS:
1.PCBCA
2.APD
3.No one else really was as good as these two.

When i heard SMD got second, a lot of things came to my mind. The first...how the hell, the second.....wtf, the third....robbery? When you look at the previous winners of VIBC you see some legendary teams like KJ and UBC Girls and Duniya (in their prime). In ALLL the girls teams ive ever seen SMD performed at maybeee at best a mediocre, looked like a first competition, kind of team. NOTHING close to Jawani or UBC girls, or even the rising AVA girls. To be held over proper team perfomances like PCBCA absolutely boggle my mind.

Someone please, PLEASE, we need a bhangra organization. And fast, because by the looks of it, my kids aint doing bhangra.

LOL! No offense but i think Harkiran from panj on another thread wrote how they knew what they were going in to when they agreed to compete at this competition. Don't blame the judges, organizers, or competition... lol its the judging rubric. If judging was more traditional based then MAYBE some other team could have placed. Seems to me that judging was more on the modern side with APD and Empire both placing. I really want to watch some videos though! :)
Congrats to all the teams that performed and placed!

It's not drama.........

If someone could answer my simple question of what "modern bhangra" is?

Cuz alot of teams call themselves folk and are far from it

Then I will understand why competitions are so f\ing chodu :)

Is Charanjit Saini the same judge who was at IPFF 2009? LOL

Also, if someone can post the judging rubric, that would clear up most of the confusion. VIBC has always been geared towards Modern teams. I was surprised to find out PCBCA & PANJ even applied.

Jason, Mr. Black and Pink coming to you live on the radio!!

I wonder what was the purpose of the third question she asked you. She sounded confused or maybe I was still half asleep??

1. Whats your name?
2. What team are you on?
3. How are you feeling?

I can't wait for the video especially for the part where one of your dancers saap got stuck within the first minute of the routine and he literally stopped dancing for a few seconds, tried to fix the problem by somehow lodging the saap on the floor while trying to somehow use his foot on it to solve the problem??

very awkward

Perhaps changing their name to FMD would remedy the problem?

At the end of the day I think the organizers did their best to accomplish what they wanted to achieve. Being a past committee member of VIBC, I know how hard it really is to organize these high caliber events. Bringing out a new Bhangra Competition, like being asked somewhere on the thread, is easier said than done and yes, at the end of the day it is about making money - without it there will be no 'next year'. Although I was not at the event (I decided to make a little trip to Seattle) I don't think the organization or the judges are to blame. At every competition someone will say that the competition wasn't legit & that it was rigged, personally, I don't think it's humanly possible to hold an event where everyone will be on the same page.

But like I said, I wasn't there so I can't really say much about this - I may be wrong. We're just going to have to wait for those videos to come out and considering that Harjot's deal with VIBC fell through and he wasn't there, I don't know if we'll ever got our hands on a proper performance video.

I have to respectfully disagree... to everything.

First, in regards to the judging rubric-yes, there was 25 points put to traditionality. But the emphasis wasn't being put on being a traditional team. Did a team use traditional costumes and appearance? This doesnt mean teams ABSOLUTELY HAD to be joris. Traditional bhangra moves doesn't mean that I have to do traditional phumaniyan, for example (Also, that might be spelled wrong-but I'm white, so I get free misspelling passes). Traditional rubrics put a lot more emphasis on how traditionality is carried out. SMD, Empire, and APD all do traditional moves, use props, wear proper vardiyan, and are mildly graceful (SMD more than Empire and APD... and IMO SMD is one of the more graceful teams in the lineup). So they have just as much a chance to place as every traditional team there.

Second, UBC Girls and Jawani have an overwhelming reputation. SMD is still the new girls-team-on-the-block... but have shown this year that they're moving up the ranks with a QUICKNESS. I, personally, have been to their practices and have watched them live-and I don't see what you see. My biases pulled aside, their routine pushes both the modern and traditional envelopes (which satisfies everyone), they're SUPER GRACEFUL, very creative, and very fun to watch. I could easily see why they did well at this competition.

And if all else, they carry themselves with class (which is a lot more than I can say for some other people). I have never and will never hear them complain about placings or think they're better than any other all-girls team. They practice hard, but just want to have a good time.

Lastly, can we please stop pulling out the "NO OFFENSE, but you effing suck" card. You might as well just leave that out.

I find it funny every time people are shocked by the results of a MODERN competition.
