i am more pro life, but would rather base the decision upon circumstances:

Rape: If it's a 14 year old girl, yeah abortion should happen. The girl's gotta go through school, most likely wont have enough finances to care for the baby, and is prob not mentally strong enough to carry a baby: Baby's life would be hell. If you're 21 and decide to walk in a back alley at 2 AM, what the hell were you thinking? you were too lazy to walk to the end of the block and go around? Date Raped? watch your drink at all times. know who you go to a party with. have your girls have your back. This is a ticky tacky one. But still, be smart, and nothing will happen.

Consensual Sex: Too bad. Have the baby at any age/circumstance. You clearly knew what you were doing when a condom wasn't used.

When woman's/baby's life is in danger (both rape/consensual): Decision is up to mother and family. You can't force a mother to abort. Some may say take my life but let the baby live. But if the mother may die and doesn't want to, we cant force her to go through with the pregnancy. What are we gonna say if she dies?

All in all, humans should not be allowed to play god. Only under certain circumstances abortion can become an option. Be smart. dont walk down a back alley, travel in groups at night, know who you're partying with, wrap it before you get tapped, and all will be well.

Don't take this the wrong way, it is my opinion and I do not intend to offend any one or any female. I am a male. I can't and will never understand what it is a woman goes through during pregnancy. But I do understand the way people think and behave, and that can be controlled.

I think women should have control of their own bodies. The actual legal abortion debate has nothing to do with the morality of killing human beings, it's more so of taking away the right for women to control their bodies, which is wrong.

If the government lets you buy alcohol, cigarettes, cheese burgers, and other things that destroy your health, lets you buy tortured animals, lets you buy products that come from companies that massacre people and then get tax cuts because of their great services, the government should let women decide what they want to do with their bodies, even if the circumstances were not involuntary (i.e. not a product of rape).

The legal debate is ridiculous, if the government actually valued human life, then many things would be different, and a lot less people in the world would be mistreated/dying because of our policies. I love it when people say 'Republicans believe in preserving life and democrats believe in killing babies', like the parties actually give a shit about the issue

You know, I understand why some people are against abortion aka pro life, because they believe that life starts at conception. But your arguments have been based on personal responsibility (e.g., "you had sex, now you have a baby"). I get that, too. But you lose me and anger me when you say the rape victim is PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for being raped. Are you kidding me? "Why were you wearing those clothes, you were just asking for it..." I can't believe you'd blame the rape victim and say "yes, you were responsible for this, you should therefore carry this baby and raise this child of the rapist." This is cold-hearted, impossible to fairly judge (which rapes was the victim not at fault, which rapes was the victim at fault, in your eyes).

It's naive to think that the victim could have avoided the rape if (s)he had altered his/her behavior. That's just not always the case. And even if someone was in an alley at 2am, the rapist is still the criminal and the victim should not have to undergo the psychological torture of the next 9 months as well as decades. How ridiculous.

Agreeeeed. Abortion debates aside, the "blame the victim, you asked for it" mentality is wrong on so many levels. "Watch your drink?" "Don't walk in a back alley?" "Don't get raped?" We can only do our best to avoid a bad situation, but shit does happen. We can always be cautious, but I don't think we should ever tell the victim that its his/her fault that the crime was committed. That's horrific.

exactly my thoughts saleem. NEVER victim blame. This is exactly the reason why girls who are raped don't use proper resources and get help because people will question them and BLAME them. "why did you go there in the first place", "why did you do that when you knew....", "what were you thinking". Its people like you who make rape victims feel even more helpless and with no control or power over their own lives. Another reason why rape victims in many cases DO NOT tell few, if any, about the incident and keep it bottled up for the rest of their life. For someone to be raped is literally hell. Did you know the victim has to be "searched" for evidence RIGHT AFTER the incident if they decide to get help? They strip down for an investigator right after they've been sexually violated so that the investigator can get some sort of evidence as to catch the criminal. WTF? So you're saying the high school girl that was gang raped in richmond (cali) a few months ago by 20+ people over the course of two hours was ASKING FOR IT?! Are you shitting me? Get your mind right buddy, even though Im not a female, Im highly offended by your low comments. Unbelievable.

Agree with the last few posts. Also, in the book Freakonomics, the authors cite significant correlation between the legalization of abortion in 70s and unprecedented decrease in crime in the 90s. Really interesting and controversial at the same time

Completely agree with the statements from Meistro, Saleem, and Kinnell. Yes, there can be precautions taken-but shit happens. Either way-blaming the victim is not the way to do anything or solve anything. The emotional damage done to a woman after being raped is... honestly, I can't even explain it. But I've witnessed it at work, and it happened to one of my best friends-and I can't describe what she feels or what any of my patients have felt afterward.

As far as the debate on abortion... I took a class my senior year, called Women and Theology (as figured, I was the only guy in the class), and this was the HOTTEST topic the entire year. Everyone had an opinion, and we argued this every which way could. A long post is coming... if I stop being lazy.

I still cannot get over this statement. Be smart and nothing will happen? To you, is a victim just a person who didn't take enough precautions? Damn, bro. damn.

has to be one of the most uneducated, desi comments I've read in a while. Shit WILL HAPPEN. Its inevitable. You wanna hide inside your house behind locked doors? It will STILL happen. Be smart? Hmmmmm, many of us are college students here, hence that must mean we're "smart" or knowledgeable or think intellectually. Does that mean nothing will happen to us? You wanna know something funny? Many people who do get stalked/raped/sexually assaulted are people like you and me. They aren't low class, drug addicts, alcoholics. They are normal ass people who take precautions just like the rest of us. Damn, I still can't believe this fool would say stuff like that.

I was not clear in my first post and I am sorry for the anger i've caused. i don't enjoy writing essays but have learned that you have to if you want to be understood.

i see what everyone is saying about my controversial ideas and i totally agree that the rapist is the criminal not the victim. shit does happen and sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. thats life. but the way i was raised, my education, and my personal experiences, you are in control 99% of the time. that 1% is when shit happens.

when someone gets a bad grade on a test its their own fault a good bit of the time. that person did not study enough. (too lazy, decided to party, etc.) that person was in control of how much they studied. had that person started studying a week before and not a day before the test, he/she would have gotten a much better grade. Shit does happen. A teacher can be a douche and make a test impossible. But you did 100% of what you could to get an A.

In golf, you are in complete control of what you do. A course having too much water or sand is no excuse. Had you played away from the hazards and managed the course properly, all would have been well. If you know there is water over a green, then you club down. Shit does happen. You may hit a sprinkler head and your ball bounces over the green into the water. But you still played a good, proper shot.

walking into an alley at 2 AM, is asking for trouble. You can't sit there and tell me that walking in a back alley at night is not somewhat dangerous. yeah it is wrong if someone does get raped in a back alley. but it would be the millionth time we've heard of someone getting raped in a back alley. You can't tell me over 80% of those women didn't know its not safe to walk in a back alley at night. its not supposed to happen, but it wouldn't be one of those rapes that go under the category of, 'shit happens.' If a woman was kidnapped and raped, that goes under the 'shit happens' category. that girl who got raped by 20+ ppl, clearly wasn't her fault. i blame the ppl who joined in, and the countless ones who saw what was happening, laughed, and kept walking. i would count this as a 'shit happens' cause this you can't anticipate.

I was not clear about my ideology in my first post. I will never say the victim of rape is solely responsible. But a student could have studied harder/more. A golfer could have clubbed down and played it safe. In life, you could have walked around the block. In life, shit does happen and sometimes there is nothing we can do. But if people thought about what they were doing, it would lead to less controversy about abortion, especially in the common occurrences such as walking down a back alley at night.

That's what i mean when i say be smart, and nothing will happen, then a thousand people around North America wont get mad at siddyp for making an outrageous statement.

How this relates to the topic (Views on Abortion):

i am more pro life because that fetus could have been you, me, my mom, your best friend, etc. it was given life, give it the opportunity to live. If a woman is to abort because of a 'shit happens' occurrence or a medical condition, that makes sense. If a woman is to abort because they weren't being smart... that raises question. A baby is a mothers property and she does legally own the baby. So I do understand your point Sonny. But should a woman be allowed to abort a fetus that was a product of her not being smart?

I don't wanna know the emotional toll it puts on a woman to be pregnant after rape. I understand that the woman did not want this. I understand the rapist is an inhumane bastard and there is no room on the earth for people like him. But does that mean that the fetus should be aborted because a woman wasn't being smart?
