A lot of these kids have parents working long hours or many jobs for years. So one negative element is the lack of presence on behalf of parents. When the parents are not home enough these kids will seek attention or 'care' elsewhere.
Another negative element is the fostering of negative stereotypes associated with Punjabis in particular. These negative stereotypes may include the idea that to be Punjabi one must drink excessively, or to be Punjabi one must protect their honor and fight anyone who threatens it. These are significant points on which a lot of these kids relate themselves to.
A final negative element in the environment is the prejudice South Asians have been receiving since their arrival to Canada. When the parents are never home who are these kids to run to in times of need? Who are they going to go to when they feel threatened or insecure about their identity? The kids end up needing to belong somewhere. They end up creating their little cliques that seem to be based on their 'Brown pride" and "culture".
The culture and pride end up being a vehicle for the negative things they do. To top it off many don't know nothing about their faiths, heritage, history, or the struggles of their people. Instead they take "Brown Pride" and attach the negative stigmas only.
Sorry if my explanation seems to go everywhere. I hope it makes sense though.
