First, a little background.

Rangoli is a competition held by Mercer University in Macon, GA, that showcases three styles of dance: bhangra, fusion, and raas with a single winner in each category. On most teams' lists, this is considered a minor event to warm up before attending actual competitions. Teams are enticed to come because of the $1000 prize for each category, year after year, in addition to a special South Asian Performer (last year was Jay Sean, this was was Lomaticc, Sunny Brown, and Baba Kahn).

If you are an organizer or part of this show planning whatsoever, please read this very carefully if you ever want any out-of-state teams to ever apply to your show ever again.

I will start off with my experience.

Rehearsals: They started at 6:30 AM. This is an inconvenience of course, but, as soon as my team arrived at the venue, we were informed that the rehearsal time was delayed by over an hour. This is unacceptable, as my team was second in the show order, leading to no possible way to have that sort of delay. In addition, this is probably one of the only competitions in which there are no liaisons whatsoever, leaving all the teams confused in Macon, GA - a city that isn't very welcoming or anything at all to be honest.

Actual Show: There were numerous technical blunders during the course of the show. There was a point where the tech staff played our intro video with no sound at all, then gave us lip whenever we asked them to play it again with sound. During the course of this, there was no effort made by the staff to inform the audience of what was happening. There literally was a blackout for 10 straight minutes with no emcee interaction. This happened to numerous teams. In addition, one raas teams' lighting didn't go on for a good 10 seconds into their routine. There were literally 50-75 people left to watch the winners as everyone was tired of being the auditorium for 4.5 hours (6-10:30).

Teams (from what i remember):

GT Qurbani: Basically stole every single NYU Pandemonium concept that one could possibly steal except not executed well and not clean. Guys in jumpsuits and guys wearing bhangra vardiyaan in alternating dancing segments. Guy in girl's wigs coming out to do some feminine moves. Grabing khundey in the middle and jumping around. They stole Delaware Kamaal's "I'm on a boat" segment.

UNC Bhangra Elite: I won't review, since it's my team.

Southern Raaspitality: Awesome costumes, but I'm not the best judge of raas. They had a live dhol part I think, which was pretty cool.

ECU Bhangra: Brought an 8 person set. I can see the clear influence from KPGD Nikhil and Sumeet ;) . I think you guys can go really far with a little cleaning up. I liked the beginning mela with the jumping over saaps segment and of course the Miss Pooja dubstep jhummar. I think you guys need to work on stamina though because everyone looked pretty dead for the last couple of songs.

Champa and Chameli: Not nearly as impressive as I remember them being last year at Dance Fusion, but i guess it's earlier in the year. They were a lot messier than usual and overall, there existed a lack of excitement. Costumes were very average too.

GSU Paheli: Surprised a lot of people in the crowd! Overall a very exciting performance that was relatively clean. I think they incorporated a wide range of moves and songs in their mix.

Bulldawg/Aasman Bhangra: A collaboration of two teams, with six guys from each. The intro video was awesome. However, it was extremely messy and I saw a lot of SGPD and NJ hints in the choreo. In the first ten seconds, there was a major line messup with saaps. The team was wearing two different sets of vardiyaan, so there was no coherence. I liked the little salute move during the Salaama jhummar. I think with a little more practice, this could have been okay, but there were a lot if mistakes. A below average all guys team. There were some creative segments though.

GT Ramblin Raas: Unfortunate that their lighting was messed up. It looked pretty good, but, once again, I don't know too much about raas.

UNC Ek Taal: Breathtaking Ganesh story with a gorgeous backdrop. Extremely clean and very epic.

Duke Dhamaka: Klasikhz mix! Awesome! We all went wild when we heard the tag in the intro video. I really like the direction this team is going in and the saaps segment was really cool! There also was a lot of cool diagonal formations. The jhummar was on point too. One thing I would recommend is learning to tie paghs without a ton of pins and making the turla more rounded. Overall, pretty clean for so early in the year.

Winners:
GT Ramblin Raas - Raas
GT Qurbani - Fusion
UGa Bulldawg Bhangra - Bhangra

Judging: The judging for this competition was absolutely and clearly biased for the second year in a row. I wholeheartedly believe at this point that NO ONE from out of the state of Georgia should ever apply to this competition ever again. There was only one judge per category, though all judged all the teams. However, the "category" judge was worth 80%, thus rendering the other two judges useless. Not releasing this criteria was ludicrous, as well as not being able to give the names of the judges prior to the show, as our team was promised that there would be new judges. The six winners from the past two years have all been GEORGIA teams and even people in the audience know the judges are biased. My recommendation is to spend less time worrying about booking a "hot artist" and more on the actual competition itself.

Baba Kahn was flashing pictures of women's cleavage and subliminal messages during their 40 minute performance.

Taking teams' registration money and not giving them a fair shot is absolutely unacceptable and downright thievery.

Overall: This was quite possibly the worst show/competition that I have ever been to and that appears to be the general opinion. So, if you are a bhangra team here, I HIGHLY encourage you to NOT apply for this competition in the future. Don't buy their lies of changing their fairness and their organization because it simply didn't happen this year.

A very busy Taco Bell runs more smoothly, with fewer mistakes than this competition did.

Winners should have been:
1) UNC but Duke close on their heels
2) Ek Taal with close second to Paheli
3) Ramblin' Raas

Quick Reviews:

ECU - 8 man set, wasn't so sure when I saw that this was the case, but you all surprised me. Needed to be a bit more clean but other than that I enjoyed the performance.

UNC - Heard this team had an injury for one of their girls during their 6:30am rehearsal, another girl learned all their formations during the day and then sub'd for the show, mad props to you. Could barely tell that was even the case. This team easily deserved first place, but no worries guys, it's you all's time to shine and Burgh is around the corner, Hope you all bring it and show the circuit what its all about, underdog style. Don't waste time with half ass competitions like this one anymore.

Duke - You all are improving every time I watch you guys, and this was no different. Your change to traditional bhangra is definitely progressing. I see a few hints of VCU/NJ however, and it can be purely coincidental but just try to look out for that in the future. Also, you all have very nice vardiyaan, however, I would recommend asking ECU or UNC to help you learn how to tie traditional paghs. I'm pretty sure UNC does not use a single safety pin with theirs, and that's how it should be.

UGA - Entertaining but messy to watch. Easily can see NJ/SGPD (Elite 8) influence in this routine. Intro video was sick to watch but did you all not know when to start your routine? It was a MAJOR improvement from last year and there were no fallen paghs (stepped on) this year around. Props, but in a pure honest, non biased world, the victory was not necessarily deserved.

Fusion Category: Ek Taal should have taken the victory. Paheli coming in at a close second.

Few Comments: Teams such as NJ, SGPD, VCU, etc. are at the top of their game because of their execution, talent, and creativity. The formations and sequences they make are very well thought out and flat out ingenious at times. There is no reason for any team to be stealing or taking these. There is a fine line between the manufactured creativity of these teams and what traditional bhangra sequence/steps are. Thus, I strongly encourage all teams to be very very cautious with their routines and to not steal any more ideas. It's plagiarism. Especially at competitions such as this, where the judges are nothing close to experienced/knowledgable, they won't know the first thing about who's routine people are "using".

Teams need to also stop depending on other teams for tying paghs. Pagh tying is apart of the competition, it is that team's responsibility to tie the paghs because a faulty one does count as points off for a team. Just an opinion.

No point wasting time on talking about this competition. It was obviously horribly run, and quite honestly most of you teams should not be going back next year at all. Mercer Committee: Next time, find liaisons for the teams, work better with your venue staff, find a better final act, find non-biased judges, release who the judges are and their qualifications as soon as you release the application packet, throw out outliers in scores? Teams put hard work, time, and money into competing here, especially teams not from Georgia, and when something like this occurs each year, it truly is not fair in any sense. Keep that in mind. First off yes EVERY TEAM had mistakes.

UNC- very sloppy [content removed]

DUKE- many rips from VCU and SGPD. paghs were very bad. you guys used about 100 safety pins in your paghs. tying paghs is the most traditional thing about bhangra competitions. [content removed] outfits were not traditional either. A huge clash of colors is not traditional what so ever.

ECU- [content removed]

Every team had lighting cues or video mishaps so everyone was judged in the same way. UGA's performance was messed up because they played the WRONG MIX. UNC and DUKEs lighting cues were messed up. so everyone had fair game to win.

and whoever thinks that the judges have relations to people on teams or in the audience are completely [content removed], the bhangra judge is from new jersey for some academy (obviously he must be professional) and the other 2 judges that judged were RAAS judges so there is no way that any team had a say so in who wins or not

Hey guys,

No one gives a damn.

Sincerely,
Everyone not on the 4 teams at this competition.
lol thank you for being the voice of the world :) however, maybe you don't care, but the teams that went to this competition were effected by this, and psant was doing a good thing by warning people about the bad judging at this competition so another team (big or small) doesn't go and waste their time.

The childish bickering over this competition is silly. Say what you need to about the competition organization to advise teams to attend or not attend, but "BhangraJatt" and Nikhil B. just made immature posts.

haha actually UGA asked me to tie a pagh for them and borrow 4 saaps before asking ECU.

Anyways, in terms of the sloppiness - we'll try and work on that before competing at Burgh next week :) Thanks

Moderator's note: Please be respectful and constructive with your feedback.

Though your methods of expressing your views are suspect, I took the liberty of sifting through the profanity to find substance in your response.

You are absolutely correct that no team present wasn't without mistakes; there were numerous formation mistakes from every team. Please understand however that this post was intended as a show review - not intended to bash your team (yes you made it blatantly obvious).

The tech was indeed an utter catastrophe and if UGa didn't win, "playing the wrong mix" is a valid concern right? But since you did, you are clearly overlooking a major fault. The show venue does have its own staff, but it is up to the board to ensure that they are doing their job. For example, there was no rehearsal of intro videos during the show. A few minutes could have solved those malfunctions.

As for lighting, I am an organizer myself and have personally sat through an entire show and called every light cue to make sure they are right.

Your point about "everyone's tech had mistakes" is making it seem like you're settling for mediocrity. Simply because everyone was screwed over doesn't mean the organizers shouldn't be at fault. This isn't a new comp either, so there have been no learning from mistakes.

As to borrowing props, I will say that BdR did ask to borrow UNC's saaps also, so I don't believe it is fair to call another team out for tying paghs.

Overall, a combination of rehearsal mistakes and tech failures made this show subpar. The winning Bhangra team had the WRONG MIX play, come on now.
