Bhangra in the Burgh 4 Team Announcement

Wow, now this is getting interesting. However, lets remember that at the end of the day Burgh Committee has the right to do whatever they'd like (unless somewhere in the team agreement or contract it says that they will invite last year's winner). Curious to know why they went with line up that they did.

So two of the placing teams from last year were not invited back? I never understand why competitions do this. They were good enough to dance better than 7/10 teams from last year, but they aren't good enough to get the chance to do it again? Awkward indeed.
College teams' skill levels can vary drastically from year to year based on the upperclassman graduating and the yearly change in captains.
That being true...I almost see it as them defending their title. Okay yes they might have a completely new team but thats the point. Its to see if the team that placed last year can be upto par and hold their rank they acheived. I mean, everyone at a competition, when beating a team that placed last year feels THAT much betterr would you agree??

I'm just trying to make a point here btw...not bashing the committee or anything
Our team is definitely not completely new, most of our members from last year returned. Sorry to thread jack, I don't mean to cause any drama, but you guys will see how we stack up with everyone at Boston.

to place at a comp one year and not get in the next is a bit weird...usually the placing teams are accepted to further broaden the competition adn to see if they can place higher (i.e. uva getting 2nd and gmu 3rd - maybe they could get 1st this year)...doenst matter how much of the roster changes or any leadership...

UVA is on a mission for boston...i like it.

competition committees do have the right to reject or accept who they want, and that is the bottom line. Still, it shows inconsistency and should be discouraged imho.

I guess it depends on the aims and goals of the team selection committee.

Some take outside knowledge about the team's history (for example, how they placed in other competitions and how they placed last year) and others look purely at the quality of the tryout video.

From my standpoint, there are many teams that ride their "name" well after their prime; there would be no venue for upcoming teams to showcase their skills and for that "darkhorse" team to surprise people if you went simply by who placed here and who didn't.

Basically, it's all relative and the Burgh Commitee chose who they believed would put on the best show.

Aaaand my theory fails. Apologies for the assumptions I made, it's something I've observed with previous competition lineups but clearly isn't true for this one.

I do think it's a little extreme for competitions like Boston to automatically accept all teams that placed the year before, especially the way the bhangra scene changes so drastically each year. But I actually think collegiate teams are the least "risky" in that sense because they have a strong foundation and consistent pool of dancers, while independent teams generally die out after a year or two. Not seeing teams like UVA or GMU in the lineup this year makes me think this is an attempt to mix the lineup up a bit. FCB is an all guys team, Columbia is a modern team, PDAP isn't from the Northeast, etc. All things that were missing from the Burgh lineup in the past.

i'm sure the BIB4 committee was diligent and thorough in choosing the line up.

having placing teams guaranteed a spot on the line-up means that 3 other teams don't even have a chance. a team that worked their ass off to improve from last yr doesn't get a shot and a team that may have a history gets in without working hard.

as a dancer, i respect those who keep improving and try year after year to earn their place in competitions and i'm happy to see the variety in the line-up will be really good for BIB this year.

that being said im so excited to be at my hometown comp with DCBC (and chilli w/ FCB) too.

BIB is always an amazing comp (yea- im a little bit biased)- see y'all there!

On another note, looks like the judges are up as well: http://bhangraintheburgh.com/event/judges

Great lineup except for Teginder Dhanoa. I was really hoping he wouldn't be judging again this year, based on my past experiences with him, he should not be judging any coed competitions. His biases against females and North American bhangra are way too narrow-minded and shouldn't be part of a judging panel here.

Look I'm sure you're just generalizing, but my team does work very hard. I don't want people to think that we have somehow become lazy just because we placed at competitions last year. The Burgh committee made their decisions based on what they wanted for their competition this year, and while me and my team are clearly unhappy with it, we do respect their right to make such decisions. In any case, we will continue to work our asses off to improve, and we hope that it will show throughout this season. Good luck to all teams who will be competing at Burgh this year.

Idk how you dint take a placing team. In fact its not just Boston that takes placing teams back, but many comps have done that. They just don't publicize like Boston does. None the less my experience with Burgh was not a good one, but they cause sometime of controversy every year i feel like. Anyways goodluck to all the teams and running the competition.

My Early Placings:

1). VCU
2). PDAP
3). Drexel

The Burgh selection committee went strictly off the videos. We actually watched every one all the way through and then went back and rewatched teams that bubbled up. That means we restricted ourselves purposefully to the applications that were sent in to allow more teams a true opportunity at a spot. Some deference was given to context (like a placing team returning) but the videos we saw were the videos we judged on.

The committee has talked with UVA (at least I have on behalf of it), and I'm not sure about GMU but they're more than welcome to call obviously. None of this is a reflection of the team, just the application that was sent in (as I told Kartik over the phone). People complain when organizations don't watch vids seriously and pick people based on reputation or associations (cause it screws over up and coming teams). This year we went the other way and focused on application videos. We're trying to be as transparent about it as we can without violating the privacy of teams that applied.

The lineup is a lot more solid than people realize. UVA is bringing it hard this year and will kill it at Boston I'm sure. So are all the teams that are coming to Burgh. See it as an opportunity to view some teams you might not have gotten to recently and then go to Boston the next weekend and watch UVA rip the stage with a vengeance.

I absolutely agree that its BIB's decision at the end of the day and no doubt you guys will attract a huge audience and talk as you do every year.

However I still do find it a bit interesting....UVA placed second here and clearly had momentum towards the end of the year with placing second at blowout. Plus afte GMU's performance last year they were def the talk of the town. It just makes me wonderr.......

In any case...Lets go VCU/PDAP/Drexel u guys are all gonna rip it :D
