True, but I think Americans never understood what it meant to have civilian casualties until 9/11. Over 10,000 Iraqi and Afghani civilians died from US bombs falling through their roofs, yet there is no mention of them or memorial for them. The only way Americans make the connection of how traumatic it is to lose innocent civilians is from the events that unfolded on 9/11. Good, hard working, everyday people were killed - same has happened in Iraq & Afghanistan, let's not forget those people.
I think your dangerously close to trivalizing the deaths of these innocent people to mere statistics and numbers. You can't compare the two even if you are trying to break nationalistic ideologies. Your attempting something that people have tried for centuries, trying to show the equality of one life. If we could do that, the death of a young white girl would be as important as the death of a poor african child.

9/11 is 9/11, it shouldn't be a way for us to relate to the death of other innocents. I dont know, I just believe they arent numbers, they cant cancel each other out... I believe thats close to being as disrespectful as those who value their own nation's causalities more...

Summy, I understand your point and I agree with you on your stance. However, the sad reality is that 9/11 is definitely an important part of this conversation, especially in the case of Afghanistan. Let's remind ourselves that Afghanistan was invaded to avenge the innocent lives lost in 9/11 but at the cost of.... even more innocent lives? Something is not right and this doesn't sit well with me.

Yes, I am attempting to show the equality of one life. We are all guilty (myself included) of leading comfortable lives while turning a blind eye to the less unfortunate throughout the world. I feel that there is a similar injustice committed when we disregard the death of innocent lives lost throughout the world, especially when these deaths are a result of our tax dollars. Also, please don't make me out to be someone who doesn't have sympathy for the 9/11 victims, I'm not going to get in to my personal loss from 9/11 just for the sake of keeping this discussion on path but please don't go down that road.

I am not sure where you are getting that, or who said anything to that matter. I am not even sure if you were reffering to me, because I said nothing that could even be mis construed as that.

9/11 matters more, because of the country we live in, and the places that we are formed. 9/11 is 9/11 because one life, one soul, one person has more value in the United States than anywhere else in the world. We as Canadians, think that you americans have our blood on your hands, but how many americans understand this? We went into Afghanistan and we lost solidiers (100), including a friend of mine, for what? For YOUR WAR. For YOUR actions. Because the AMERICAN people voted Bush in twice. If people in the west can't understand the equality of life in their home country and abroad, look up north.

Having said that, people seem to reinforce the divide in the world by comparing world tragdies. "9/11 only 3000 people died, look how many died in Iraq". No talking about you in specific Waleed, its just how people seem to understand the loss for human life.

I, personally, dont see 3,000 people died in 9/11, and 80,000 Iraqi civilians died. I see 83,000 innocents dead, for no reason. I think once you let political and social issues influence how you see the death of an innocent, in whatever side they are in, your walking down a sad road. Side A vs Side B is pushed onto us, at the end of the day, 83,000 people didn't deserve to die, regardless of where, when, how and what side they were on.

Just for the record, I'm Pakistani. Born & raised in Pakistan and I still hold a Pakistani citizenship. I can't vote, I can't cross the border but I do have to pay US taxes. Talk about a crappy deal - true FOB status.

That's exactly what I have been getting at Summy. In America, there is a sense that American lives are more important than other lives... same thing in Pakistan, Pakistanis or Muslim lives are more important. We need to start moving away from that mentality or we are all doomed. We need to start embracing the idea of a larger and united world community.

I think you said it best here..
