Career in Bhangra

So all you Bhangra enthusiasts and experts....we all luuuuuuve Bhangra...right?

What if you were to pursue a career in Bhangra? What are the diff. options available for a decent career, here as well as in India?

One could be a :

- Dholi
- Coach/trainer
- Vardi (costume) designer

More? Lets get creative and think up some careers, lol

a DECENT career? LOL.....unless hollywood or bollywood seriously start getting into bhangra (and no not the sarina jain type), there will be no "decent" careers. Heck, it doesnt even have to be traditional, it can be modern.

2. teach at local gyms and youth groups I guess
3. Make "how to bhangra" videos but I think Sarina Jain has that market tapped out

Yeah but the VIBC committee all have other careers. VIBC is not for profit and all volunteer base. No person makes money off of VIBC.

Well this is how jobs are created....I mean the cave man didn't have the jobs like 'event management' right, lol

I am basically brainstorming right now, but who knows there's a niche out there to be tapped ...so thread reopened

Every single club/competition in BC makes money off of bhangra...there are two faces to everything, u can't call it a legit job and I think there is no appropriate title LOL. Most of them get performances done by various people and the money dissappears, nobody knows what happened to it, same with competitions. They try to make it seem legit but it never is and nobody's going to say anything about it muahahaha except me. Bhangra is corrupt period. By the way there is no such thing as non for profit, it only means the organisation found a way of making themselves look good-getting the government involved is always a way of ripping people off more. Thats for all organisations, I am not specifically targetting vibc cuz I don't know that much about them.

Open a dance academy/studio. Nakul Dev Mahajan makes a living doing so by training his dancers in bollywood dance. There has to be a potential for an academy that has great instructors, professional and personalized tutorials/programs to develop a dancer from rhythm-less to expert, and provide various platforms (comps, talent shows, showcases) for students to show off what the learned. To do this you have to understand both the business of managing such a studio as well as the creativity in providing a service that most people get from youtube videos (learning moves on their own)

Not TRUE! I've run bulldog for the past 4 going on 5 years and I honestly say I have NEVER taken a pennny of our profits. Infact, me and laddi are bulldoggys biggest sponsor! I've put thousands of dollars of my own money into the show and never gotten it back. I honestly throw bulldog because I LOVE it, it consumes a lot of my time and its a dedication that few people really know. WE really are non-profit none of the money goes towards us organizers we dont reimberse ourselves for anything either. Yes, I agree with you that there are many shows that will dabble in the profits a little but not all competitions.

Unless you are a professional singer, Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti or the next tigerstyle you can't make a career out of bhangra.

I don't believe currently there is a market for the art of dancing bhangra so as a dancer you're better off finding something else to do.

As for NDM dance academy, they cover bollywood/HFD more then anything else and currently market all indian dancers to the general audience better then anyone else could. Breaking in as a competing academy would be a horrible idea unless the market for bhangra gets ALOT bigger.

The league can have a crop of judges that are known to be fair, and these can be the majority of the judges that are at comps. Comps and teams can pay annual dues, and if its organized enough, why wouldn't mainstream corps want to get their hand in on this?

I like how you think..the only place where I think bhangra (or any artform) might struggle is audience-base..

1) Will people want to buy tickets to these comps
2) Will corporate be interested in buying commercial air-time from channels that show the comps
3) In NFL and the other major sports leagues, "competition" is taken very literally, in that teams confront each other on the field. Bhangra comps are a li'l diff, right?

But I think there's a possibility of such professional-level comps. Something like "NBL"

Well I know of South Asian Arts here in Surrey. Goppi (United) and Rakhi (UBC Girlz) run it. Goppi has a major in Mathematics and Rakhi in Marine Biology. But yet they do nothing with those. They make their living off of bhangra, they run 2 academeys, have dhol classes wtc wtc. They go around BC and get invited to schools for workshops and have their own radio show.

So it would be tough but can be done
