Re: Competition-sponsored liquor/drinking at comps

first of all...i didn't read through all the posts so i don't know if this point is brought up or not.

I agree with Harjot...there are underage dancers on A LOT of teams and they shouldn't be given access to liquor by the committee or by the OLDER people on their team...so instead of giving the teams a bottle of goose in the welcome basket, why not just give the 21+ people on the team a bottle AT the after party or have a area set up for only people who are 21+ with team wrist bands...so that way the people underage can't drink...this way people on teams who are 21+ are happy and the people who don't drink can just have fun dancing and having FRIENDLY battles =]

but we know there are a lot of underage people who drink...and if they get access to liquor on their own...we can't do much about that.

just a thought.

Re: Competition-sponsored liquor/drinking at comps

I think bottles in the gift basket is a horrible concept. I would much rather get a gift basket that can be useful to me for the actual competition (pins, water, etc.). Also, what if a junior team gets into bayside? Will they be provided alcohol too or will the be treated differently than all the other teams?

As far as people saying people are going to drink anyways...thats completely fine but theres a difference between the afterparty and the actual competition/show, which is normally in a faimly-based setting. The show is meant for people to showcase bhangra and have fun doing it. The afterparty is for people that want to have fun after in a non-family based setting. It would be fine if the organizers somehow found a way to negotiate with the club to give teams a special wristband that gives them a certain amount of drinks at the party i guess (or free cokes/juices for people like me). I just think there should be a line between the competition and afterparties.

Bhangra is getting a bad rep by the older generations because of the increasing correlation between bhangra and alcohol, and this is just going to get worse if competitions start giving bottles with their gift baskets. Bhangra isn't supposed to be a drinking competition, which it has kind of turned out to be recently.

Ok, if many people are going to get drunk at competitions, dont buy them alcohol, as they would probably have already made plans for their drinking. Giving alcohol is a bad idea because the gift basket would be received as teams got into their hotels, and more problems probably come from Hotel Noise than afterparties(in terms of punishment on the organizers/team side) than loudness. If people complained some guys are loud, and just one of them happened to open that bottle of goose and drank, it gets to be a huge deal, and then multiply the whoop-ass by a million(equivalent to your grandma with a flyswatter) when you throw kids in their. Thing is, if competitions arent sure if everyone is over 21, dont bring alcohol. Also, more and more good teams are bring in sick kids to dance. These guys are 16 years old. What if nachdi jawani warriors applied and got in? Your talking about giving something that excludes them, and what are you going to do if anyone shows that to kid, or tempts kids. We can all deny being idiots on a forum when we are sober, but we cant deny idiocy when your drunk. The side-effects from alcohol at competitions are numerous, and contribute to the other "sins" of hooking up and ultra-competativeness gone awry. If the liason buys the alcohol, thats cool. Its an independent decision not supported by the organization. However, if you want to set a good example, and dont get bullshit happening to you from a whole bunch of performers performing, then minimize the stupidity that could happen. What could have probably been better if you talked to each team individually and worked things out, because if you wanted to add icing on the cake(which this seems like the idea behind this), there are many other ways to do it. Water at performances, seeing to teams needs, and even devising a plan for people who can drink to drink would be a better option than doing this. I know its in jest, and Vince, you probably didnt realize the extent of whats going, or the feelings of individuals, but this is a dangerous precedent that, if indulged in, could go out of control.

oh, just wanted to add that bayside provided pins, and lots of water. pins came in the gift basket, as did candy, the shirts with shot glasses, and they had soooo much water. that was awesome.

I agree with Harjot and Sher. Also, I think giving teams bottles in their gift baskets is unnecessary because the competitions money would be better spent on helping out the teams with hotel/flight costs, food, or anything that ALL teams would benefit from. If they give alcohol to teams, only those who drink are benefiting.

If they really must give alcohol to the teams, they should give a bottle of whiskey to teams that want it before the after party.

Re: Competition-sponsored liquor/drinking at comps

quick comment on this whole older generation looking at bhangra as a negative thing cause of all the drinking and what not.

my parents love that i dance, love that i want to compete, and love that a competition is a weekend affair rather than a few minutes.

what they hate. the stupid ass Indians that dont go to shows, just the afterparties. they live for this shit, and they live for fucking up a weekend. They show up hammered as shit, dont respect the competition or the committee, and start fights. my parents dont worry about me drinking too much or hooking up with girls or shit like that, cause they know if i were to do shit like that it wouldnt just be limited to a bhangra competition after party (i am an average college student that goes out regularly), but they do worry about the gangster ass wanna be dudes that will start a fight over something as small as some other dude spilling a drink. lets be honest, how often do the fights that happen at after parties involve teams/team members. its always the dudes that come straight up to cause problems. i hate going to after parties and seeing creepy motherfuckers that have to sole intention of picking up girls or fighting boyfriends, it sucks.

my solution? Require a ticket stub or evidence of participation to get into an after party. will a club be willing to do that? probably not cause thats less money for them. just a thought.

and regarding the whole bottle thing. got the bottle, put it in the freezer, and didnt talk about it till after the show. in all honesty it was just convenient cause we only had like an hour after the show to get ready and what not for the after party. so it saved time/money. i thought it was nice, and it in no way connects bhangra with drinking for me. probably because im an adult and am capable of forming my own opinions, rather than having them subliminally inserted into my head.

Very true. If teams come to have fun, well first off they're there for a reason, BHANGRA, DO THAT FIRST and don't mix alcohol with bhangra. It's stupid. Some people may be able to control themselves, some just can't. As sher said, afterparty is totally separate event, after the bhangra competition. Do what ever you want at the after party because your doing it individually, it's your choice, however before that your with your team, your actions will also drag your team's name in the situation.

People who drink= Disagree with Harjot.
People who don't= Agree with Harjot.

Agree with harjot, rabb dittiyan mast jawaniya saanu lord na kise sharaab di :D

give the bottles at the club

people who want to drink will go to the club and do it, and people who dont drink and still go to the club will have to deal with it cuz there's already drinking going on at the club that way all the people that dont drink and dont go out wont be offended

its inappropriate to give bottles to teams otherwise

^^^ That should end the argument. Look let the people drink...its their decision but dont give out bottles because not only does it make the competition organizers liable but it also taints the name of the Bhangra "world" that has been created so far. Competitions should just avoid that. It will save you money...not only from not buying bottles of alcohol but the money u wont be using in law suits and crap...

Re: Competition-sponsored liquor/drinking at comps

I really think the bottle issue goes back to what a competition is claiming to be. Bayside was not a competition about culture, it was about a good time in Tampa and teams putting on a Bhangra show for the local crowd. You can complain all you want that Bhangra is Punjabi and it doesn't represent Punjabi culture (and that's true to an extent), but then drinking AT ALL is a problem isn't it?

Pull this at something like VIBC/DDA/AVAP and then I get the issue because of how they market themselves and what they claim their purpose is....but Bayside was a great comp, well organized and no one had any delusions about why teams chose to come.

Maybe moving forward comps interested in doing this in the future can just ask team captains when they arrive if they want the alcohol and some non-alcoholic thing like sparkling grape-juice or if they'd rather just have the non-alcohol bottle and the liasons can get it to them after the show.

I agree with Harjot 100%. It is very disrespectful for a competition to openly give alcohol themselves.
Here we are trying to stop underage kids from drinking, and they are openly providing it.

I agree that, yes its Florida (beach, drinks, and parties), but it doesn't mean you disrespect the Bhangra scene.

Will there ever be a clean competition with no alcohol? With clean boliyan?

If you dont like what a competiton organization is doing, dont attend the competition, dont apply to the competition, and dont discuss what the competition does for its performers. Let people do what they want to do. The organization made this a fun weekend for people to relax and enjoy and put on a show. The organization made the decisions they made, LET THEM LIVE WITH THEIR DECISION.

I'm not saying you're all wrong when it comes to the whole underage situation, but you guys cant do anything about it, let them deal with it, whatever the PROS and CONS may be.

Re: Competition-sponsored liquor/drinking at comps

not going to elaborate on whats already been said...everyone has brought strong points!

Personally, Bayside is a party competition. We got a bottle for coming and two straight from the bar shelf for winning and i love Vince to death for it!!!! Yes i can see how it can be a liability issue amongst underage kids, that would be horrible..........but...........whoever is against all of this, please donate your Goose bottle to another team next year and im sure they'll find great use for it! =) *dibs*

im so busy with finals and work ill be writing my review later on, but before i get back to my books, BAYSIDE was EPIC! Whoever missed out or thought twice about applying you will regret it 'til the end of time!

I agree with Sher, at warrior the committee gave out REALLY helpful gift baskets, with juice and water, breakfast bars, tooth paste and little tooth brushes (which came in handy because the hotel didnt have any), braces and wraps, etc...

Giving teams alcohol is sort of like saying "here, get hella drunk the day before you perform." not really helpful. As for the younger people. We have ppl between ages 16-21 on the team. Beliefs about drinking being right or wrong varies from person to person. but what would a committee really say if it went like
Committee: Here is some alcohol
Team: we dont drink, we dont believe in drinking, we think its bad, etf blah blah blah
Committee: ....... aaaaaawkward
Team: offended.

To Bhangra Comp committies: All it takes is one sensationalized story in the media to ruin the image of Punjabi culture and Bhangra. Teams are more than capable of walking/driving to the liquor store and purchasing alcohol.
