from my experience, the best way to get home when youre intoxicated at any level is to stand outside of a restaurant that delivers, call in an order and have it going to your place, then when the delivery boy jumps out to deliver it offer him a few extra dollars on the tip to take your ass home too.

you get food and a ride home. killing 2 big ass birds with 1 stone.

it honestly depends on the person...its all in your head if the person feels they cant drive when they are high then that is what will result. however if the person believes the can drive properly while high (harman toor) then they will be able to drive fine. i have been in a car with harmantoor while he is high and i believe he drives better, as he previously stated

All I am saying is that intoxicants are ingrained in the Punjabi culture in a non-negative way. They are seen as a spiritual and joyous TOOL. We all put hard work into preserving bhangra and showcasing it for north america, we're allowed to drink, and i don't think that is a negative for the culture. If people start fights, and bullshit, that's because they are irresponsible, that's not a reason to say drinking should be curtailed.

I've always seen the alcohol/drug problem in Punjab to be a very negative thing. When a mass group of people gets drunk there are normally negative consequences. Punjabis are known to be the alcoholics at the party that pick fights. I would rather take this part of our "culture" out of the picture.

Punjab has a huge drug/alcohol problem, which means bad things happen because of alcohol/drugs. A study was conducted in Chandigarh in which they found that 85.7% of people surveyed with drug dependence reported health problems related to drugs/alcohol and 77% admitted to family problems from alcohol/drugs. I don't see how these can be taken as positive aspects of alcohol and drugs.

Intoxicants have historically been a means of expression in dance and religion. In punjab more-so than other South-Asian areas (maybe not sindh). They aren't negative in the sense of use in the correct fora. Instead, the current abuse of intoxicants in Punjab is a separate issue. It is REAL problem, but historically, intoxicants as expression have not been portrayed uber negatively.


Sufism, Punjabi Folk dancing/culture (i'm talking historically), do not take the same approach to intoxicants as some are lobbying for here. Is there a drug/alcohol problem in Punjab? yes. This has nothing to do with bhangra or religion though. I would put the blame on contemporary Punjabi artists that misrepresent intoxicants as something that is alright to abuse. Again, i'm off topic, and for that I apologize. I just wanted to respond.

Lol ah fruitless discussion is awesome. I guess one day well learn we can only discuss with people looking to expand their views. I'm not even gonna jump in on this weed impairment conversation but I will say there are people who "can handle their liquor" and still make dumb decisions because they're impaired and don't know it. Same goes for weed, whether you "think it or not"

Harjot, I could not agree with you more, I am underage myself and I don't really mind drinkers because they can't influence me, but I have seen how easily some others my age can be persuaded. when you take the responsibility of being part of bhangra, you are not just dancing, you are a role model for others, you represent the entire bhangra community and punjabi community. Now I'm not saying that everyone should stop drinking and become saints. I'm just asking some questions.
Is liquor really required to enjoy a comp weekend, can't you have fun sober?
Bhangra comps are about BHANGRA not partying till you pass out, because I'm sure it wasn't like this a few years back:

I've seen Bhangra Competitions being all about "Bhangra" (2004-2007) and more recently (2008-2010) it's not about "Bhangra" anymore

I know the bhang-ra theory (or whatever you call it) but aren't we supposed to become enlightened and learn from the problems with the past as time passes?
One big question:
How is bhangra, the art form and dance (not the ancient style of getting high) related at all to getting hammered? This goes back to what Harjot said

Bhangra is much more about the partying concept and less about bhangra these days.....this is the attitude the younger generations coming into bhangra are accepting.
