Bhangra Critic and Karan P Singh, I think I can understand your point of view, and you guys make a fair point. I've been following NA bhangra since 2007, and I will agree that performances today aren't like what they used to be. The truth is exactly that; those days are gone, however, not necessarily for the worse. 2008 was a time when teams still did live segments within their music sets, had all girl/guy segments, chose generally slower songs, simple mixes, etc.. and you can see now, that the live and music categories have somewhat diverged and taken on a life of their own in NA. I'll have to agree with harmantoor on this in saying that if its not live, its not 100% "folk", and in that respect, anything goes for a music set. Simply put, they are 2 different games.

From what I've experienced over the years, the more "folk" elements of bhangra (or live bhangra itself) is appreciated by those who generally have had more bhangra exposure, whether it be through dancing themselves, or just being exposed to it as part of their culture. In NA, these people generally only consist of 10-15% of the entire audience for any show. When organizers decide to throw a competition, it's their job to choose the type of audience they want to attract, and in order to attract the the other 85-90% of the audience, the best way is to market it as an entertaining, mind blowing experience, RATHER THAN just a presentation and appreciation of dancing talent. When choosing teams and judges, these competitions choose those that will give them the result they are looking for, aka, performances that will sell tickets. Not saying that you can't be folk and entertaining at the same time, but that's often a difficult line to straddle for a lot of teams. I see folk bhangra is something that's presented, appreciated and respected, while modern bhangra is something that's entertained and directly applauded.

Like I said, I understand where you guys are coming from when mentioning the over-the-top gimmicks with little bhangra relation, but the fact of the matter is that's what sells, and that's just what people want to see, and as long as people eat that shit up, teams are going to continue to do it.

This thread is so stupid. the people who say it should be more folk don't even fucking dance, they sit on youtube and jerkoff to teams. Like the people who complain that the circuit is too modern

I hear what you are saying i probably felt the same way 3-4 years back. But look man if you dont like it, dont watch it. im glad every team does shit differently otherwise we would be watching the same boring videos over and over again. For the same reasons i dont like watching a lot of coed teams because all of them seem to look alike. Diversity in the circuit is the key to keeping it alive and running. Everyone does bhangra the way they like doing it. Simple as that.

Finally someone who understands and appreciates the true beauty of real bhangra

That's not real Bhangra...no one even knows what real Bhangra is. <--Jhoomer done now-a-days compare it to saraiki Jhoomer smh. If you want to go back to the the topic,"How bhangra should be done Folk", then you make no sense. UNC is known as being more folk than modern. Yes they had their band come in and that may have played a part in them winning in Elite, but look at NYPDs performance---> the floor slide saap move, the America's best dance crew foot shuffle, karate kicks (not calling out NYPD I liked your set over UNCs anyway). Seriously get your head out of your a3s and realize that you make no sense. You obviously have something against co-ed..and most likely you're against all-girl bhangra teams as well. Look at all the sets from elite...none of them had the basic folk-esque style to them. Lmao "real bhangra". I mean at the end of the day I do like all those teams that you mentioned, but guy you're a dumbass. Learn what folk is, and try to learn how to articulate what you mean in a better way before you make claims of what "real bhangra" is.

Ok smart guy let me break down your comment part by part When I said real bhangra I simply ment real bhangra moves throughout at least majority of the performance.

I'm talking about a majority of Co-ed teams I have nothing against them I just don't watch them because I choose not too watch them And I dont have to explain any further what I watch and what I dont watch to you

Folk, I know what folk is I bet alot more than you do, WHen I said folk I mean follow the roots of folk not even be exactly like it but when your performance is majority an act I dont consider that folk I consider that an act. Im not taking away from the dancers because They are talented.

Before you call people a dumbass know who you're talking too

& just to clearify I have nothing against Girls doing bhangra at all I dont I like all girl teams smd tag and more are sick as hell and so are a few co ed teams in my oppinion But im talking about a vast majority which all seem to have the same style thats not bhangra too me

The bhangra circuit is evolving over time, just like everything else in the world. Yes old is gold, but keeping something the same for a LONG time decreases the interest of people. Everyone has ideas and thoughts that they believe would make things much more exciting in the circuit, keeping the interest of everyone while maintaining the "traditional" style of bhangra.

Can we go more than five minutes without dredging up this topic on this forum.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: IT'S ALL FUCKING SUBJECTIVE. ALL OF IT. If you want to talk about what "folk" Bhangra really is, talk to Gibb. He knows more than pretty much anyone alive about what folk bhangra and other Punjabi folk forms actually are. The short version, though, is that "folk bhangra" is a construct, and a pretty recent one at that. Most, if not all, of the actions that are traditionally considered folk weren't considered canonical prior to thirty or forty years ago. Heck, most of what the circuit considers traditional jhoomer is about a decade old, or even less.

The short version is that it's all a construct. Bhangra isn't this monolithic bloc of unchanging actions. The dance is alive and is continually evolving. Everyone has their own preferences, but it's nigh on impossible to objectively say that my version is better/purer/more accurate than yours.

In any case, I'm going to report this thread. It's not because you're not entitled to your opinion. You are, and thank you all for expressing them. It's because this is like the tenth thread that has come up on this topic in the last six months. We don't need another "folk v. modern" thread.

As far as I was concerned this thread was already done you brought it back upAnd I'm so sick of repeating myself, Evolving to the point where it changes the whole bhangra and makes it look like BHANGRA isn't I could rip you apart right now I just don't feel like arguing topics that obviously both have seperate oppinions are I want the Punjabi culture in bhangra to stay alive

The entire point is that "what looks like bhangra" has changed so much and so often in the 70 years bhangra has existed that your argument has a false premise to begin with and dancers on this forum who have been paying attention to bhangra since you were in elementary school are tired of ignorant people falling from the sky and crying about 'folk'. If you care so passionately about "Punjabi culture" then make a team that changes the bhangra scene such that everyone forgets about prime example of everything you think is wrong with bhangra. Currently, its modern teams: 1, Karan Singh: 0. Change that instead of trying to tell the circuit that its lost its cultural soul.

Jake if you're home this week I am too and I something for you.

Oh boy heres another person trying to be smart using big words thats fantastic son You have no idea what I do and what I have done so let me stop you there. This is isn't a competition between Modern bhangra vs. Karan Singh but if you want to make it a battle big boy I will be glad to rip you apart.

Theres so many teams in the modern circuit that I follow and have been following for years now Teams that are real Punjabi Bhangra Teams who promote the Culture in there acts but still have modern in them. I have my reasons of not being on a bhangra team and If you knew me you would know why.

I've said this a million times and trust me I'm obviously not the only person who feels the same way considering apparently alot of posts have been up about this. Get your shit straight before you try coming at someone

I love Modern bhangra...that STILL STICKS TO ITS ROOTS...I see your on bhangra empire...Please just stop talking to me now

Karan there's no point in arguing, i said it before, there's too many of them and few of us, that's why we're "old" or "like only one style" kind of people. These acting teams will continue to defend themselves and try to show how their sets are modern, rather than realizing its no longer bhangra but a dance routine with a few bhangra moves. Majority, not all teams, are going against you because those teams do this "modern" bhangra, so just don't argue, and like i said before lets just keep faith in teams like JJ,NJ,NYPD,AEG,SGPD etc and hope that at competitions they smack those teams while doing what they always do, keeping bhangra where it belongs. Btw, i'm not wasting time arguing with you "modern" teams so don't bother replying.

"Passionately" is the biggest word I used. Really dog?

I will stop talking since I dont know what I'm talking about, and will do what I do best: watching our 09 bruin vid. Have you seen it? Its pretty popular.

Good luck to you and your other embattled friends.

P.S.
When someone (i.e. everyone who has responded to you on the forum) takes the time to engage with you, you should take the time to understand what they're saying rather than just reading it. You'll have a happier BTF career.
