Judging for a tradional competition

I think the circuit would benefit from Havish Bhalani, Sapan Gandhi and Arjun Barua judging. I know them on a personal level but from a detached opinion, they exemplify the evolution of bhangra here in the states from a collegiate level and have an idea about how it's going to keep progressing.

gotta agree with this. also, i was with the judges throughout bdm weekend....and when judging was going on, arjun took the longest to truly be sure he got everything down. the guy is detailed, and considers every element of a set. Also, there doesn't appear to be any sort of bias in his judging.

If you want traditional judges, get traditional judges who have danced live Bhangra. Many of the judges posted have done traditional Bhangra, but i wouldn't call them proper traditional judges because they have done Bhangra in the past 7-8 years. Since then till now, Bhangra is still "evolving". We're so used to seeing teams doing gimmicks, being creative, trying to compete with the rest of the teams just because of the creativity fad. Even if you are called traditional today, you really aren't. Judges' mind is set on seeing what everyone does today. They already know what to expect from the teams performing, which is being creative, gimmicks, blah and blah.

I would not use judges from live teams...they usually are either closed minded, or they are not up-to-date on what is going on in the circuit today...

You can either have a live bhangra competition or a music bhangra competition (I personally think its unfair and confusing for both, live and music teams to be in the same category). Jabar, your list would be best suited for a live competition. For a music competition with a traditional rubric, I believe you could have people like Pashi or Benny.

From what I understand, this bhangra competition would have music teams but you would like to have a traditional judging rubric and select traditional teams. For this type of comp, I would suggest: Pashi, Benny, Ajit (3D) and other seasoned ex-dancers who have danced for "traditional music" teams for a solid number of years. I would stay away from the super traditional judges because they sometimes fail to appreciate the creative & innovative factors and also have a bias against co-ed or all girl teams.

some of the very teams that we consider "traditional on music" dont even execute the most basic moves as live dancers in india would...simple stuff like single jhummar n dhamaal, you dont see all the dancers on the "best" music teams hit those moves properly at all sometimes ...i think it would be great it a competition had judges like the list jabar gave, because their feedback would really help the circuit out...the point about them being close-minded is valid as well, but from you have plenty of ones who arent like that (narinder paaji of shan-e, iqbal virk ji of nj, gursewak paaji of phulkari, etc.)

If a judge places your team at the competition in question, then he/she is qualified to judge bhangra.

based on the feedback that has been given to teams. It is easy to tell if the feedback given is good or not.

Thank you kush. Those of you who have seen the teams we call "traditional" today, live, can definitely tell how each dancer dances different than the other. Having a coach helps a lot. The closest I've seen dancers from one team to dance almost alike is the vcu guys which also includes joshilay jawan dancers.

Actually, Pammi Bai does judge bhangra in india, and I remember he was also in North American to judge a comp or 2 if im not mistaken, about the other 2, ki pata

Pammi is a great 'live' judge, along with amrinder gill and sarabjit cheema. Im not joking either, all these guys were captains of their respective college teams in india.
