I think the issue here is more so having respect for your peers' work. We are all playing the same game, most of us have respect for each other. Technically mixes aren't anybody's property. heck, anybody could've used the legendary NY Jets' playbook in that era. But did they? Nope, because of respect for their peers. If little kids or even adults admire your work, and would like to use it in their culture show, mela, party, etc, for non-competitive purposes, then get your head out of your ass, because its supposed to be a good feeling. Stop acting like your mix was made from some God-given talent and its untouchable.

Actually, to add to my last post, when i was a member of the Duniya allstars back in 2006, we had a mix that was used for receptions and other gigs, compiled with choreo of naagne from KJ, Labh kithon and sohni mahiwal from sher, Bas kar from soormey, suhe suhe and heer from LBC, etc. Out of respect for these teams permission was asked before using the songs and choreo and because of the class and reputation that these teams have, they were more than happy to allow us. I think this example should be used before using another team's mix. We had fun performing these bits. At the end of the day we should all remember why we're here.

I agree with you Meistro and I do remember that gig perf it was fun to watch. Seeking permission is the classy and right thing to do of course, I think we all agree on that. The hypocrisy that I am talking about is this- ive been trying to find the thread but i cant seem to find it, but people were posting a while back saying that teams shouldn't be stingy with mixes and what not, and should post them up whenever they can (anyone recall this thread?). However I think a lot of teams hesitate because they hate seeing their work ripped. I'm sure as a DJ you're flattered a little (again, im no dj, i can't mix for crap, i'll mix "hawawaan" with "bombs over baghdad" thats how horrid i am), but i imagine that it gets under your skin. At the end of the day, its hard work putting it together, any dj in here will agree with that.

My argument is that mixes ARE intellectual property because they enhance routines and give you eargasms. I dont think anyone here is stupid enough to take another team's mix and straight up use it, and of course you cant expect everyone to ask for permission whether it is a small show or a proper performance. That being said, I imagine it is annoying at times to hear your work being used elsewhere w/o permission, its like someone copying a semester project that you worked hard on. If it comes down to "posting on a public forum means you are relinquishing your rights to control your mix," then if some teams are being asked to post their mixes, can they be blamed for refusing?

the worst is if your at a comp and 2 of the teams that are competing against you use ur old mix and ur routine haha that is actually happened to UC DAVIS GIDDA TEAM i think in OH i didnt see them on btf going crazy.....

I think it was a Heeray mix that was determined to have been stolen off the Youtube video in some performance posted here awhile back. I think you could hear the screams from the original youtube video in the mix but it still didn't sound that bad. It can still be stolen.

Honestly if the caliber of the performance is so casual that a low-quality rip from youtube is their mix, then why do teams care? at that point it's a tribute, its not like theyre threatening you.

I very rarely start threads, and I try to be constructive or productive with my posts too.

But I just want to point out the hypocrisy of trying to guard your mixes once posted online. Even if you buy all the songs you use in a mix, you haven't paid the proper licensing fee to modify or use the song in a way that significantly adds contribution to your product. That means these mixes are illegal anyway. Does anyone care? not really (least of all me).

But as soon as that mix is online, you can't get angry that someone used it for their own purpose...pay the licensing fee first. A mix is not your own in the public domain, people are free to use it as they see fit just as you did when you made the mix off of other people's songs/effort.

Do we frown on copied mixes? of course. But unless its a fun thread like most of the LBC ones (where we're sharing an inside joke). Leave it off BTF, please.

edit: At some point or another a thread comes up with people complaining. A recent one was just more juvenile than usual, but it's a common enough occurence that this is not directed at any team (but maybe at one specific person)

to be honest i dont think hearing my mix being used by another group for something non competitive, etc, would get my blood boiling, but what do people think about others using your ideas in a mix. For example, as Imran said, if you give out 5 songs to 100 people, youre gonna get 100 mixes back. But what gets my blood boiling is when someone does the same thing as you, particularly after you have posted it. Not trying to thread jack or divert the direction, but i was curious to see if its only me. I'm not saying using the same dhol sample or even building off a style. But if tomorrow I make a mix using lil wayne's fireman and putt jattan de shokeen, i think pavan or all of sher should have an issue with this... different issue but related...
