Does anyone else not find it fair that everyone is dubbing Phelps the greatest Olympian of all time? He is competing in a sport that has all kinds of different variables...4 strokes, numerous distances, and relay after relay event. Not saying that Phelps' achievement isn't phenomenal, but I would never give the title of greatest athlete ever to someone who competes in an sport which allows so many events for medaling. In my opinion, if you want to crown someone as the best athlete ever, look to whoever has the most dominating decathlon performance ever.

why isn't there a backwards 100m track race, or maybe even a 4x100 bearcrawl relay?

yeah I agree, greatest olympian should go to the person who wins the decatholon or something and breaks records in that. Now thats a mental and physical test. If marian jones hadn't taken steroids and still accomplished what she did, I would name her one of the greatest olympians ever. Even guys like Carl Lewis were amazing.

Yes, greatest athlete is always going to be argued...because of course..comparing across sports...is apples to oranges...to say he is the Greatest Swimmer ever is a better title...but the reason people are making that big jump to greatest athlete...is because of the rigors of the last couple days and the days coming up for him...it is questionable how many athletes across any sport would be able to handle what hes been having to do day in and day out at the olympics..."athlete" is too general of a term....but the reason they are able to make that jump is cuz of his raw stamina. ahhaha...the guy is a pure machine. You can't really say that the most dominant decathlon performance would be the greatest athlete either because decathlons do not test swimming efforts (its 10 ten track and field events)...none of which measure some of the aspects that some people would consider being a "good" athlete (namely swimming, or hand eye coordination even)...

if bhangra were to be incorporated into the olympics and a team consistantly won gold medals. THEY, my friend, would be the greatest OLYMPIANS ever.

Well, greatest Olympian ever is not the same as the greatest athlete ever. He's won more golds than any other Olympic competitor, which is the definition they're going on. I agree, though, that it is in a way "easier" for him to do that since there are more events he can compete in, but who the hell are we to call what he does "easy"?

Jordan needs 4 othe guys... Golf is not a sport... Roger Federer is good, but he's not the Bonds of Tennis, more like Albert Pujols...
Um, ok. I'm not even going to touch this...

I agree that they are going based off his medal count. You could make a case for Misty May and Kerri Walsh being the best olympians ever too, they havent lost a volleyball game in years, but ofcourse they could never match the number of medals won by Phelps. To do what he is doing is unbelievable, like Jeeti said earlier, he's a machine. Phelps doesn't just win, he annihilates his competition, theres a huge difference.. He's in a league of his own...

Hans, your second statement was useless, be a man and speak your mind, dont hide with your tail between your legs...

Meistro, I'll dunk on you from half court! hahah...

And actually Jordan didn't need 4 other guys. When did you EVER hear of guys like BJ armstrong, Bill cartwright, john paxson, toni kukoc, luc longley, JUD BUCHLER, Horace Grant, steve kerr, BEFORE JORDAN? NEVER its because of Jordan that people even bought jerseys of these players. Without JORDAn these guys would be no names. They were washed up veterans before they joined Jordan. They became SEASONED veterans by joining the bulls in the jordan era. You could stick Jordan on the freakin Clippers or the Bucks and those players would become household names. Jordan doesnt need ANYONE. SHow me any other NBA player (besides someone like Wilt Chamberlain who was a Monster compared to those shrimps in the 60's) who IS or WAS as dominant as Jordan. THERE IS NOBODY. Hell, Jordan was 6'6" and he did all that.

When I said 4 other players, I mean that Jordan would not be Jordan if he played the game 1 vs 5. He had 4 other players on his team that deflected some attention away from him to let him do his thing... The basketball equivalent of Bonds did in baseball is like Jordan averaging 40 points a game being double teamed everytime he touched the ball... and I love Jordan, he was no doubt the best basketball player in the world... But Bonds was a bigger force in baseball than Jordan was in basketball...
