wow, great idea! perhaps you can get organizations from local high schools or universities involved as well? That could help with attracting a larger crowd. Also sometimes if you co-sponsor with a university organization it can help you get a venue for free. It could be any organization focused on community service and they could help fundraise, sell tickets, advertise, etc. Are there any Red Cross clubs, Sikh/Indian Student Associations, Keyette clubs or anything? You're probably not going to get to that stage of planning for a while.. but just a thought. Do let us know if there's anything we can do to help!

I love how much feedback I'm getting on this-makes me happy :)

Also, do I need a lawyer to register as a non-profit organization? If so, any lawyers out there?

Ok so we need a name so I can start actually distributing paperwork and looking for actual sponsors-getting in touch with the organization, etc. etc. Which one do you guys think fits best.

Also, my committee and I are open to other suggestions. These are the ones we came up within a 20 minute brainstorm.

You didn't post anything...

As it is, most bhangra competition names have VIOLENT patterns. Bhangra BLOWOUT. Bhangra BASH. Bhangra BLAST. Desi DHAMAKA. MASTI. BLIZZARD. Vancouver International Bhangra EXPLOSION.

How bout, just suggestions - Dance Dance Revolution? DANCE DANCE BENEFACTION or NAACH NAACH BENEFACTION. Names of the competition is hard if you want to orient it with service.

B3 Competition: A night of Bhangra Benevolence and Boisterousness!

I think Bhangra BLIZZARD comes from all the snow that Buffalo gets in the winter season.. Correct me if I am wrong..

MASTI = VIOLENT Patterns? How So?

I thought Masti meant a celebration? Doesn't really seem violent to me.

What about Masti 4 A Cure, or Masti and the City. The name has so many possibilities-I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.

Ummm...

I thought about another name, if you don't mind...

since it's a NYC competition, and there are 5 boroughs (and "5" rivers in Punjab) why not have "Panj Borough Bhangra: Nach for a Cure" or sumthing like that...?

just a suggestion...

Ok, so i was gonna say I really like bhangra 4 a cure, butttttttttt I LOVE RAJKARNS IDEA!

I mean, in case you end up making thsi an annual competition in the future.... Panj Borough bhangra would be amazing... and then you just add an afterthought to it

That name is really getting me excited rajkaran

I like the Panj Boroughs idea!
or call it "Bhangra Pao" and get into a bitter trademark lawsuit

Hmmm... Masti means mischief. I mean, it's more or less in a positive light as in mischievous fun but it doesn't mean celebration in any regard or at least not in Gujarathi or Hindi. Masti 4 a Cure? It doesn't really work that well.

And I changed my mind, Rajkaran just owned with his name.

Personally I like Panj Borough Bhangra.

Problem: I'm also trying to lure in a diverse crowd. A word like "panj", with non-desi people present, could easily go from everyone thinking "wow that was a cool name" to "the name seemed to be a challenge for a lot of people and after hearing it being pronounced wrong for about 3 hours, I'm going to call this competition a failure." I'm being a bit overdramatic, but whatev.

What if I whitified it a bit... "Five Borough Bhangra: A Charity Competition for the St. Jude Foundation." Yes, No?

Also-Masti or Nachne aren't that hard to pronounce for us non-punjabi/non-hindi speaking folk. Neither are words like Apna, Virsa, Dhol, Chakde, Balle, and a few others.

Thoughts? Ideas?

My thought and idea is that Panj Borough Bhangra is the best thing since sliced bread. Totally go with it, totally.

Yeah same, I like Bhangra for a Cure as well. Adding Five-Borough etc. makes the name too long in my opinion. Also, I dunno but I feel like there is a more pun-type of name that goes along the lines of Bhangra for a Cure that might sound better but I can't seem to think of it right now.
