Kabaddi in Bhangra. It's getting old now.

Teams who go traditional yet don't know what or why they're doing it. They can't tell the difference between jhummer or dhamaal, can't identify a mirza beat or a phumania segment. To them, they're just steps to a bhangra routine.

Teams who don't know the songs that they dance to. I can understand not knowing song lyrics because for us non-Punjabis, even though I make as much effort as I can (see translation topic), it doesn't come naturally. But know what song names you're dancing to at least!

Me: Dude, sick choreo to Sher Punjabi!
Person: Was that the last song we danced to?

I'd rather not get into this argument, but... Bhangra isn't Sikh. There isn't a requirement that you must be unshaven for you to be wearing a pagh.

There is a cultural context and a religious context for paghs. In Bhangra, you wear a pagh for the cultural context, just as Hindu grooms often wear a pagh/turban during their wedding. A lot of Sikhs may do bhangra and I do believe the pagh should be respected, but Bhangra is not Sikh nor should Sikh guidelines apply. Personal opinion, when performing, you either go all out with the facial hair or you clean it up. Scruff doesn't look that good on stage.

a turle vali pagg doesn't look good without a beard....

even though bhangra today isn't associated with sikhs ..cuz of all the songs about drinking and what not....when it was originally started ....it came from the punjabi sikh region of Punjab. The reason people wore paggs back in the days is because they were Sikhs. So obiously there is some connection to that......thats why paggs shouldn't be thrown on the floor..etc................. It is true that it is not a requirement that you must be unshaven to wear a turle vali pagg.......but honestly the outfit isn't total without a beard (for guys)..........a beard and kundiyan muchha just take it up another level....in my opinion. =)
Turbo, what are you talking about? Facial hair for girls is a MUST. :) It may not be attractive, but it's tradition.

Everyone should have a beard, it is a must otherwise points should be taken off! Thats how it is in Punjab! Points should be deducted from the category which deals with uniforms, pughs etc. Also points should be taken off if you dont tie a chadra properly, meaning if they too high or something.

Are you serious? Points off for having stubble? Come on. 1. Not everyone in Punjab has a full dari and 2. so what

i actually think this is one of the most ridiculous things in the circuit. why is it that EVYERONE MUST have a beard? please explain...cuz quite frankly the whole beard thing i believe is stemming from religion. not everyone in punjab has a beard, east or west. and not every dancer in india has a beard...so i dont understand this...this is just goin back to traditional talk, and wat exactly is traditional? wel never know, most trends are jsut word of mouth. i think thats wat tradition is. theres no 'right way' theres just a way thats been passed on by certain people..

i duno if this should be a separate topic, mods can move my post if its too deviating.

The majority of Indians and many Punjabis I know have surprisingly sketchy mustaches (and no dari). I insist that entire teams show up moustached. (not the cool type that you can curl I'm talking the THICK SKETCHY kind)

PS - this is from The Quest for Every Beard Type; Oh, the weird things that cross Reddit and Digg!

Alternatively, this

Let me make clear what i said, when i meant have a beard, i never meant have a full beard!!! Not shaving 2-3 weeks before the comp should be good. Thats how people do it in India as well as here. Like VCU all of their guys have a beard when they perform. Lol i never meant to say grow a full beard!!! And from what I know they actually cut points in India if you dont have a beard at all!

if you can grow a beard, grow it, it just looks good with the pagg. a clean shaven face with a pagg just looks awkward and funny.

as for beards in punjab, it is a cultural thing as well as a religious issue. i know in islam at least, it is sunnah (the way of the Prophet=recommended) to have a beard at all times. so from the muslims in bhangra, we should be repping the beard :) i cant speak on behalf of the hindu view on beards, i will let someone else talk on that

If you cant grow a beard than thats no problem, we have a 1-2 people on our team who are young and dont have beards! One other thing religion has nothing to do with growing a beard in this case!

interestingly enough, let me share with you something that is passed on by word of mouth with lots of people in the general persian gulf area,

the story goes that when the first muslims (in present saudi arabia) first encountered scouts n riders from the persians to the north, they noticed the persians all had mustaches and NO beards. its said the muslims (and some versions of the story say the prophet himself) said that all muslims should shave their mustaches, and keep beards, so as not to resemble the 'kafirs of Pars' to the north (zoroastrians)...(whether the arabs had beards already and shaved mustaches then, or if only had mustaches and started growin beards then, i do not know)

and if u notice, most sunnis (arabian origin) tend to shave the mustache and keep a beard (i mean the religious men, and imams), where as in shias (persian origin) tend to have the beard but also a mustache..

i dont know if any of this is true, im just passing it on since it is a story told by many. cuz im a geek for history like that ;)

soooo whos down to rock nutty mustaches for a competition? hah eff it, ima do it for csun

grow a beard or go home! lol jk, but ya its cool if someone just doesnt get facial hair. if you're able to then i think you should atleast try by not shaving 2-3 weeks before going on stage, like turbo said kundiyan muchha are always a plus

Beards are just a way of looking more manly in punjabi culture. You have boliyaan like "thurley vali pugh, hathaan vich gaaney jachdhey ney, kurta reshmi paiya, hath muschaan tey rakhdey ney". Its just a way of being macho. And it looks good!

So the whole beard thing i feel yea its a plus for having a beard as in not shaving for a little while so you get a nice dark face you know maybe a 3(smallest clip) or 6 mm(2nd smallest clip) your preference and how thick your hair is. But PLEASE DO NOT do the whole chin-strap/goatee or anything like that. if you can't grow out a beard or you prefer to be clean shaved at all times please feel free to do so but be CLEAN SHAVED like you're about to goto some job interview not the i just shaved yday or two days ago type of clean shave.
