dont walk over a persons legs if you do they won't grow
ahaha I think it goes

If your sister or some female in your house (cousins, not mother or grandmother, massi, pooha, etc) hold family walks over you, you wont grow, so they have to walk back over it backwards and apologize

If you drop a spoon you'll get a girl visiting your house
and a fork for a guy

dont open an umbrella inside

if you hang upside a bar or something, you'll grow LOL

the big ones in my family are:

1) Don't jingle your keys (or repeatedly snap scissors) else you'll provoke a fight
2) Don't make retarded faces b/c if the wind blows it'll get stuck like that
3) Don't buy anything made of steel and bring it into your home on Saturdays

hahaha oh man the grief I've gotten for all of these...
Also my friends in India only pass a cigarette a certain way when sharing (you're ONLY allowed to hold it between your forefinger and thumb while passing it...not pass it while it is still between your forefinger and middle finger...anyone else heard that?)...else you'll get in a tiff with the person you passed it to.

Here's another one: If you drop salt you're gonna have to pick it up with your eyelashes in your next life.
thank goodness your eyelashes are long enough then! i actually am very jealous of them, to be totally honest

and to add something productive to this:

-Putting a black dot of eyeliner behind your ear to stop 'nazar' (evil eye)
-Don't pick up someones shoes that are older than you or something bad will happen, i'm sure. i never really questioned this one, i was just happy to never have to go and pick up peoples' shoes hahaha

rattling keys means your parents will fight.
I've also heard that opening and closing scissors without cutting anything means your parents will fight. There's also the one about not using a broom in your home after it gets dark.
Where do people get this stuff from?

Here are more :
- Don't wash your hair on Tuesdays or Thursdays (I get yelled at every Tuesday and Thursday)
- Don't act like a crippled person or you will turn crippled (thanks to gsingh)
- Spraying perfume at night will attract ghosts
- Girls on their period can't go to the mandir or gurudwara (Idk if this is a superstition but, I think it's stupid)
- Never touch tree's at night because they are sleeping
- Don't step on books because you won't learn anything, eventually will not be educated
- If you ever drop a dollar bill, you will be losing money in the future!

We should just make a rule book of what to do and not to do!

if you touch a person of low caste you have to take a bath in a holy river.

women used to not be able to eat food infront of the men in the family.

many hindu/sikh families forbade their kids from eating food from a muslim house.

some of these superstitions can have bad consequences. alienation like whoa.

*If you drop the peda while making roti, a guest will be coming...

*Don't unnecessarily open and close a chimta, it starts a fight in the home..

*Don't wash your clothes on Thursdays...

*Don't ever give someone salt directly in their hand, you will ruin your relation with that person...

*Don't cross any waterways a week before your marriage, spirits will follow you...

*Hijras or Khusras who come after your wedding... If you don't pay their demands, they curse you and your child will be born abnormal...

anyone ever hear the urban legend of the indian woman with the backwards feet who hitch hikes for a ride.. and that if you encounter one you shouldn't talk to her or she eats you lol
I heard this when I was really young.. and it still scares the buhjeesus out of me on foggy nights in Punjab.

The one I beleive is that eveytime there is dark and you have a metal peice with you say like KARA, no kinda bhoot bhret will come near you. That one is for self confidence.

Fun reading these, alot of them bring back memories especially the shoes on a bed brings snake and these sneezing before leaving a house.

I wonder though if some of these actually have a good meaning back in the day?? Maybe they were ways of saving money?

For example

- Dropping salt and spice - these would have probably been really really expensive back in the olden days, so what a brilliant way of stopping misbehaving kids from spilling it?

- cutting nails at night time - lack of electricity in the olden days probably meant you would loose the nail and then later step on it in the dark and hurt your foot?

- dont wash your hair/clothes on a certain day - I guess its a good way of saving hot water/shampoo/soap.

And as for all the opening umbrella indoor superstitions.... I sure do feel sorry for all the bhangra teams doing "chithe suit te" routines with an open umbrella!!!!
