Oh, and doing drills in a line or a staggered formation is ideal. Have at least 2 people (who know what to look for) watch and critique.

  • First off, they gotta have a strong passion and love for bhangra. This means they're willing to do whatever it takes to improve (inside and outside of practice). If you don't see this in the noobs, this is the first thing you want to cultivate in them! Do whatever it takes to get them excited about bhangra! Only then can you move on to doing drills and hardcore practices. If they don't absolutely LOVE it, they're not going to make much progress, no matter what you do.

That is absolutely the golden rule of recruiting....You hit it right on brother...The rest of the advice is solid, but theres no question that those become passionate...are not only going to just take instruction...but watch and learn and become video whores hahahha...You have to get them into it...much of the stuff that Arjun instructed on doing...impassioned people just pick this stuff because they are constantly trying to improve....

Some people just can't get the beat! - Mariam
That is so true.
I had to teach up to 15 girls and only 4-5 got the beat, shoulder, feet movement
and about 6-7 guys and only 4 got it
they all have passion for bhangra which is why these kids want to learn :(

Oh, but there is a magical trick. May work on some:

One of our guys has this CD from India, and there's a track which is all dhol, but more like 500 dholis all together (well that's what it sounds like). It starts out slow, like a jhummar beat. Then it moves on to medium beat, to fast pace. And the chaal [?] changes up here and there but the idea is you make a person do ONE STEP/move from the beginning all the way through the fast part. Get it? And so they have to keep matching the beat. It's crazy. It works sooooooooooo well, though. I'll upload the track soon as I get the CD to rip it. I think it's actually a dholi warm-up tape or something lol

It helped one of our persons soooo much.

At smaller schools, you may have to get dancers that may never have danced bhangra before. I had this one philippino girl at tryouts who was a fantastic hiphop dancer/choreographer. She picked up bhangra relatively quickly and was able to dance well. Obviously, she needed to learn expressions and bhangra mannerisms, but she was a good dancer and I needed good girl dancers.

I wish someday that I am on a team of dancers that are not afraid to do bhangra in public. I have a tendency to bust out in public, but you'd be surprised how many experienced dancers don't have the confidence to bust out random jhummer in public. lol

I can't stop dancing. I'll just start dancing anywhere at any time. I don't care whose watching. :)

Yo that's the true definition of a bhangra lover right there - confidence to bust out in public, dance when your Jaan Punjabi ringtone goes off in the middle of the sidewalk w/ non-desi friends, to choreo in a public bathroom, walk through the parking lot going "CH CHH" and popping your head, etc... Such a beautiful level of bhangra love to reach :) I sooooo agree w/ Kinnell and Karan!

It's like being madly in love... You don't care who sees, and you can't help yourself
