Worst Thing you've seen from a Bhangra Team?

She broke both her wrists, her nose I think too, and one or two more bones.
What a trooper. Props.

Like using a guy for the base and two girls for the rest. And then they bounce up and down. Seriously, how can you not see how wrong that is? Roll Eyes
You're right Kinnell. Sadly, such 'stunts' still take place - they look so trashy.

Yo Saleem...what was the name of that team that tried to start shit with us at Blizzard 2006? I think it was something like Bhangra Express or something, but in the words of Roger Clemens, I may be mis-membering. Anyways, these guys were total jerks. One of the kids on my team tried to be friendly with them and at the mixer asked what team they were. The kid got in my friend's face and asked if he wanted to fight (seriously, no joke). With that kind of attitude you would have thought they were intense and really put a lot of effort into their dance. Watching them on stage, it was evident that they had not. They didn't have paghs, they basically just tied shawls around their heads. And the didn't even have actual vaardiyan, basically they were decked out in kurtha pajamas. Honestly, I thought I was watching a team of Lagaan extras do a "bhangra" routine.

Remember how bad of a rep Bhangra Xpress gave themselves on POL? You have to look up that thread where some kid from Bhangra Xpress thought everyone was attacking him and he was getting really offended. They were at AVAP and did not look decent at all.

Wait, I take it back. It looked over some old posts and it was not Bhangra Express, but rather the team was called TBA. I really don't know what the hell that stands for though. SOB Sulman and Waleed were at that competition though, maybe they can add some insight into how awful a dance this was.

TBA was a team from Vancouver, "The Bhangra Association," and yes, they blew my mind away as well. Their bhangra looked like bhangra drunk uncles do at a wedding reception, no joke, it was pretty sad.

One of THE most unique "bhangra" performances ever. The whole event was clearly a joke to them. Their routine seemed like it was made 'one drunk night' because all the boys were bored. I've always refrained from saying anything negative about other teams but with TBA I will make an exception as they made a complete mockery out of bhangra and our culture that night. Vijay, how did they get accepted for Blizzard?

All I remember is, them forming a giant train and dancing to "rail gaddi" for a whole minute. Ashwin Im surprised you didn't go Incredible Hulk on them, that would have been more entertaining to watch than their routine.

Side note: It was actually a good competition (a bit long though). TBT,Cornell,Columbia,GTA,UCI.. a lot of good teams were there.

I found some pictures of them on MPELive. Enjoy!

I think it was that year at blizzard where they had an eating contest during intermission which resulted in one of the contestents vomiting.

Jesse good call it was them, the scattered continous boos n jeers were probably also majorly a part of MIT's pagg kick scandal at boston 2006.
I know the paagri-thrower. He was in high school when he dhol-ed for MIT during BB 2006. I actually did a few bhangra dances with the kid. Won't name him though, since he's already got enough shit for it.

One thing that should NEVER happen, but happens all the time is guy/girl peacocks. Like using a guy for the base and two girls for the rest. And then they bounce up and down. Seriously, how can you not see how wrong that is? ::)

** i think i know who you are talking about...i believe he tried out for Northeastern that september, although there were alot of faces there that endedup on MIT or BU after getting cut.

Oh god, TBA. I remember that show, those guys were assholes. We just finished the long drive from NYC to Buffalo through ice and snow in a 15 person passenger van crammed with all ~18 of us. We walk into the hotel at around 2am, tired and starving. TBA was chilling in the lobby as we got there, so we introduce ourselves and shake hands, and then one of us asks them if they knew where we could get any food nearby.
"Oh, there's a Denny's right around the block," TBA dudes say.
"Right around the block? Like walking distance?"
"Yeah, you can't miss it"
So a group of about 8 of us, all of our guys, start trudging in the snow looking for this elusive Denny's. We see a highway overpass, so we thought maybe it's just over the other side and they're bad at judging distances. It wasn't. We walked in the cold snow for about 45 minutes the night before a competition before we finally gave up, ate some hot pockets at a gas station, and called our friends back at the hotel to wake up and come pick us up. When we saw a couple of TBA kids back at the hotel, we figured they just made a mistake or maybe we missed it entirely. One of our dudes went up to them and a TBA kid says "Yo, did you go to the Denny's?" and our dude says "yeah..." The TBA dude, with an evil smirk on his face says "Haha, yeah you didn't find it, right?"

Assholes. We kind of got tooled, but who expects another bhangra team to be such dicks at a competition? Everyone normally goes out of their way to be friendly. So I guess that was the worst thing I've seen from a bhangra team.

yes, tba also stole money from the wallet from a kid on our team when we shared a dressing room with them at blizzard...worst people ever

and for kinnel, it is the evolution of that competition that has been going on in albany, bringing it a bigger stage...i will hold off on more details until we have some more concrete info

Sulmoney,

In regards to Desi Dhamaka, the organizer this year said that next year Cornell, Columbia, and UCLA, along with some other teams that I forgot, were already confirmed for next year.

Is this legit, or was it just idle talk? It seemed shady to me that the home team (Siena) won it this year when they didn't even had puggs. They wore box-ish hats Moroccan style. They also danced to Aaja Nachle, the Bollywood song! Let's be serious.

I personally think Drexel should have won.

Was it a legitimate bhangra competition? I'm pretty sure Drexel's FUSION team competed and not their bhangra team. (I met the fusion team @ Desi Hungama, which was a day before, and they said they had that competition the next day). Did the Drexel team only do the bhangra part of their routine?

and Siena Bhangra, as I told Sulman, just wow. It was a very interesting performance to watch.
