I would have to say it's because of the controversial history, the birth of both India and Pakistan featuring much bloodshed over the region that is Punjab, has lead to many people referring to themselves as being isolated from both countries but exclusive to the region that holds the best qualities of both nations (Punjabi).

I'm indifferent about it because a) I'm Gujarati, b) I consider that to be proud of where you come from, because at the end of the day that's what it's about.

some punjabi kids outside of india have a different conception of their identity and heritage because of 1984. usually their families were hit hard and lost people and for that they feel alienated from indians/hindus/indian government and in a way to rebel they try to lose their 'indian' identity.

As has been pointed out, not all Punjabis are Indian, as they can be Pakistani. But no, I don't get particularly offended by being called Indian. No, what I find more strange are those people who seem shocked that I'm Indian when I'm a rather brown guy..

My fault. This is just as crucial, if not more, than what happened during partition. You're exactly right about the feeling of alienation.

I don't get offended.. I agree with Yankee that we have our own identity but ain't that a little racist or stereotypical. The broad picture is that most of us are Indian!

A couple things at play here..and I don't want to get into 1947 or 1984 or any other calendar year:

1) Your race
2) Your ethnicity
3) Your nationality

These are 3 different things and may or may not be related. We all may have reasons to love/hate all 3 -- some people like being of Southeast Asian race, or Punjabi descent (ethnicity) or simply Indian citizens

Since the word "Indian" may mean these 3 different things, its hard to tell accurately if one is Indian

In this age, we are all complex beings - of overlapping cultural heritage and a mix of beliefs and systems. And I am not even counting religion here

**Best practice: don't associate yourself with just one of the above 3. You're all 3, yet your none of them!

Confused?

Peace :)
