Hey everyone,
I was reading the "Community Service/Seva at Competitions" post, and I was wondering "What if the competition by itself were community service oriented." I've only been following the bhangra scene for about a year and a half, though this is my fourth year as a dancer. I don't know which competitions are service oriented (other than AVAP-which I only found out because Arjun told me), but I have the theory that if the competition itself (that is without the competitors needing to do any community service) is community oriented, than the attitude of the competitors might change.
The idea somehow led me to this vision I have of throwing a competition in the NY/CT/NJ tri-state area, on a university campus location (preferably residential campus). I envision the proceeds would be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. https://www.stjude.org/stjude/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=f2bfab46cb118010VgnVCM1000000e2015acRCRD The idea came from when I was getting my state emergency medical technician certification-which is a long story. The mixer could start off with a speech from a St. Jude representative and child receiving treatment, or even a child who's finished treatment. The competitors could make cards to the kids (though that might interrupt with my "competition by itself, without competitor needing to do service" idea... but whatever!) Oh yeah, and of course dancing.
When I say "beginning stages," I mean that I literally dreamt this up within the past 3 hours. I know about sponsors. I know about hotels. I could type up an application by the time I complete this post (slight exaggeration... but you all get my point). I have an idea on how to do a bunch of things that I'm leaving out of this post (its 5AM... gimme a break). I know what I'd want from organizers if I were a competitor.
But I've never thrown a competition before. I've helped organize school/community service events, but nothing to an extent like this. If I get help, what can I estimate to be the time between beginning ideas and actual competition day? Any ideas-other than the obvious? Anyone within the tri-state area willing to help. Private Message me, or just post here I guess.
Competition name-Nachne di Raat (p.s. Gabar, you're the man!!!)
