Doesn't the "Bhangra For A Cure" name kinda sound too charity event-ish? Granted, it is a charity event by all means, but it's more than just a charity show-it's a competition. Likewise how it is more than a competition-it's a charity show.

I was hoping to have something easy to pronounce and still bhangra competitiony, and have the "A Charity Event for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital" as the subtitle. I feel like having the charity part mentioned in the name, and then again in the subtitle (because not mentioning it in the subtitle just seems weird to me) might be too much.

Thoughts?

Personally I like Panj Borough Bhangra.

Problem: I'm also trying to lure in a diverse crowd. A word like "panj", with non-desi people present, could easily go from everyone thinking "wow that was a cool name" to "the name seemed to be a challenge for a lot of people and after hearing it being pronounced wrong for about 3 hours, I'm going to call this competition a failure." I'm being a bit overdramatic, but whatev.

What if I whitified it a bit... "Five Borough Bhangra: A Charity Competition for the St. Jude Foundation." Yes, No?

Also-Masti or Nachne aren't that hard to pronounce for us non-punjabi/non-hindi speaking folk. Neither are words like Apna, Virsa, Dhol, Chakde, Balle, and a few others.

Thoughts? Ideas?
So people would have problems pronouncing Panj, but not Bhangra? Even Indians mispronounce Bhangra. I think you are being a bit over dramatic - and you probably dont want people who wont come to a show because they can't pronounce it correctly anyways.

The reason people will mispronounce Panj btw is because the "a" is suppose to be a "u". But if someone has a problem with Panj (Punj), they'll have a problem with Bhangra, Masti, Chakde and Balle as well. If they can pronounce Masti, Joe, they can master Panj.

BTW, if you didn't know, the name Punjab is composed of Panj + ab. Panj means five and aab means water. Essentially Punjab means Five Waters which makes sense since it is the land of the five rivers.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

Ok look, I didn't want to sound like an asshole before-which is why I didn't say it-but I'm going to say it. Any title with the word "borough" in it, in New York City, sounds like a community college. Queensborough, Kingsborough, Borough of Manhattan, Panj Borough, Five Borough (there's a school "Five Towns")-you get my drift? My committee's not going to go for that, native New Yorkers might not get it, and I'm on the fence.

I want something somewhat seductive, fun sounding, and easy to pronounce-kinda the reason why I was calling it Nachne Di Raat for the past few weeks. I didn't have a problem with it until other people had a problem.

Anyone out there who's creative and can think of something that fits my criteria... without the community college sound?

Kinnell the difference is that non-indians know what "Bhangra" means when coming to a bhangra competition. Non-indians dont know what "panj" means and they have no idea what "FSDKLFJKLSDFJ Borough Bhangra" means.

I guess I can see that as well...

If I come up with anything creative...who should I PM?

bhangra for a cure sounds goood. becasue it does attract teamss! and the subtitle for who it is, is a good idea aswell. maybe at the mixer we can go visit the hospital instead of always sittin and doing nothing. good luck with the show hopefullly you can get somethin together!

wow...that would be awesome! You could even get the kids to come to the mixer you know? Assign each team a few kids from the Hospital and their task is to teach them simple bhangra (like a phumania step or sumthing)...and then the kids show off what the learn and then whichever team/kid combo does it best gets this and that (but actually they'd all get something cool in the end...like gift certificates to six flags or sumthing...u know?)...just an idea?

it would really get teams involved in the cause of the competition as well...

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a name!!!!!!!!!! To be disclosed at a later date-wanna keep it a secret for now ;)

Also, any suggestions, PM me-I'm open to any suggestion or any idea.

Also, St. Jude hospital is in Tennessee-however, what I plan on doing is having a child with his/her family come to the competition, along with a St. Jude rep. She could talk at the mixer, she'll talk at the show.

I also started the idea of this competition as somewhat of a sociology project... "will teams' attitudes change if a) it's a legit comp, and b) if it's already service oriented without them having to do any service themselves?" So I'm thinking of the mixer allowing teams to interact, allowing them to dance and enjoy each other's company-but also make cards for the kids while waiting to get food, or something more creative. I'll think of something once I'm up to that part.

Captain Obvious, ftw! ;D

I speak only Gujarathi and Hindi, so please understand that I do get raped by Punjabi.

Imagine an acronym for your competition that works BOTH ways. Sorry, I may be overthinking this, Joe, but let's take something like this: It's an example, not a suggestion.

NYDC = New York Dance Competition = Nachde Yaar De Charity (Yeah, I swaggerjacked NYPD). Correct my Punjabi, please.

Yeah Harman, I really want to learn Punjabi. Unfortunately most of the "Punjabis" I know speak Hindi (and obviously not real Punjabi).

Main thing I think you should stress is FUNDRAISING!!! This is always the biggest project and you need to have everyone on your committee to help you out with the funding aspect. I would get everyone to put together a list of possible sponsors. Everyone usually knows 2-3 ppl that will donate the big bucks :) Also I would talk about possible venues and hotels etc. see where you might get discounts etc. Since it's ur first meeting your probably going to just bounce ideas off e/o so a big agenda might seem overwhelming for the newbies....A good idea would be to come up with a sponsorship packet and task list to give everyone. If you let everyone pick 1 task that they are responsible for, chances are its less hassle for you to deal with. :) PM me if you need a rough sponsorship packet to look at! Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK

I love how much feedback I'm getting on this-makes me happy :)

Also, do I need a lawyer to register as a non-profit organization? If so, any lawyers out there?
Hey guy - I'm a law school grad (prepping for the bar exam now). You don't *need* a lawyer to register as a non-profit 501c3 org - the the basic forms are available for you to do on your own. However, getting the help of an attorney can be really beneficial - not just for the filing part, but also with learning the ins and outs of running a non-profit. Same with a CPA. There's a lot of knowledge they can provide you with that you won't have access to right away, and they both can also help you understand the legal implications/consequences of actions that you want to take with the group or fundraising that you want to do. If you do look for an attorney or CPA, make sure to find one that's worked with similar organizations before.

Here's some info on forming non-profits in NY: http://www.citmedialaw.org/legal-guide/new-york/forming-nonprofit-corporation-new-york
It'll give you an idea of the process.

I don't know if you've heard of Benefit Bhangra or not (http://www.benefitbhangra.com/), but try making contact with them. Maybe they can help sponsor, or at the very least, help you with info on forming the corp./org.

Hope I was of some help. Good luck!

* I would recommend you to make a list of your main expenses first of all. (Venue Cost, Prize Money for the teams, food/drinks served throughout the competition etc.)

* Consider what month you want to do a competition and find out which venue is available during that time.

* Create a sponsorship package once the date/venue is finalized and hit up some business individuals to help you with funding.

* Once the meeting is done, find out about 10 reliable individuals who you can depend on and assign them tasks to run the competition smoothly.

Let me know if you need any help and good luck with the meeting.
